yes. they had my truck for 3 weeks, charged me $350 for that diagnosis .also the timing chain . maybe. that's all i got. from a very reputable shop, a shop that used to get a lot of my company fleet work.

my sound does not go away. the sound is always there. , doesn't get louder, doesn't get quieter, the ONLY time you do not hear it is the first 20 seconds after a cold start. that's it. the engine is at a higher rev to. you can hear it in the cab, you hear it the most when the engine is at low rpms. like 1000 to 2000 rpms.
If the sound goes away , it sounds like with the heating of the engine, it warms up the oil and flows a little better, or the exhaust manifold expands and seals up the exhaust leak for the most part.
i had the valve covers off of mine, thinking maybe one of the oil ports may have been clogged, and the valves were not receiving the oil needed. after getting the covers off, all i found out was my engine is immaculately clean.
inspected the lash adjusters too, they tend to stick after a while, they were not sticking, or at least to my knowledge they were not.
the flex plate, even those it gets warm, it doesn't get engine or transmission hot. if the flexplate is compromised in any way, the sound remains b/c it doesn't get extremely hot to change how its running.
a friend of mine told me the other day, i dont know how true this is, if you put your foot on the brake and give it a little gas, it torques the flex plate a bit, if you notice the sound goes away by this procedure, its the flex plate. <<i haven't tryed this yet, or even know if its true, but ill try anything at this point.

Thanks for getting back so quick. I've eliminated the exhaust leak. Sounds like the brake/torque check should be easy to do, but my tick does go away when the engine is hot, so it looks like pulling the valve covers are next.
I would do it tomorrow but am committed to changing the water pump on my wife's Windstar. (Another of those $45 part/$ 800 labor deals that turned me into a DIY mechanic!)
I've still never gotten an explanation why the tick is only audible through the oil pan, if it is a lash adjuster. The flex plate makes more sense in your case, though.

Look on Ebay for the Ford DVDs and get the one for your year.
The trick is setting the computer date back so you can use the DVD.
There is a nice little program called RunAaDate. Very handy and you no
longer have to deal with setting the date back. The DVDs have a expiration date
and that is the reason for the date change. Other than that you get the data that
Ford sends out to the shops.
EDIT : I found one for you to look at.
Ford 2000 2001 2002 F 150 Truck Service Manual Set DVD | eBay
Take you time and if you run into a problem don't be afraid to ask questions.
If it looks funny or feels wrong stop and recheck things. Also a digital camera
that you don't mind getting dirty is very handy in putting it back the way it
came apart. Also if the book says torque than don't skip that or guess.
One useful item when it comes to small fasteners is a cupcake pan. All the
small screws/bolts and nuts can go into there own cups.

Procrastinating right now, seems more important to look for fender flares than work on that water pump!

When you get tired of setting the date back try this tool.
RunAsDate - Run a program with the specified date/time
Makes it too easy. Also you can move all the files over
to the HD and make some small edits in the config file
and you no longer have to stuff the SC into the computer,
I have the instructions here somewhere let me know if you
would like them.
One word of warning I am taking more time to get things done
do to upsetting my back again. I try to keep computer time limited.
