The wife's 05 escape with a 3.0, for whatever reason had the alternator start on fire. As I've been working through the emotions of, Why didn't you let it burn?, I finally had to dive into the repairs. I've got all of the burnt wiring issues taken care of, and at this point, I'm not gonna worry about the melted plastic cover. So my last issue is, the only other thing burnt that I can see, is a vacuum line. Looking at the firewall, just about center is the "vacuum canister" out of the left (passengers) side, a line comes out and Ts. The line that comes out straight is melted closed, and I can't figure out where it went. I can't find another melted spot, and who knows how much hose melted while it burned. Can anyone hook a brother (who just suffered through his second alternator replacement), up with a location for this vacuum line??

 

If you could get a picture of it I will do the same on mine tomorrow - my flash isn't good enough to show the lines well. Mine is an 04 but I think they are close enough to match it up.

 

Right out of the cannister, there is a T. The line that comes out straight is the one that I'm trying to find a home for

On my 07 Mariner, it goes into a reducer, and then a small shiny black plastic line that goes into the firewall between the two A/C aluminum tubes.
I am pretty sure it is used to run the vacuum 'motors' that move the HVAC flaps for mode and maybe temperature.
Assuming the small line is broken or melted, you can cut it off square with a utility knife to open it up again, do the same to the other end, and slide some regular vacuum line over the plastic ends and it will work fine.

Sorry about that. Mines been on jack stands for the last couple days trying to finish replacing the last couple of coolant lines that feed the oil cooler. I guess at 287,000 miles it's about time.


So here is my bad picture with even worse paint drawing on it.


The line that comes out of the vacuum pod and goes left (in the picture) does like tom explained. It goes into the firewall between the two metal a/c lines.
The other line heads to the right and has a T in it (where I drew my awesome red T) that goes into the intake. Then it continues to something on the right side of the picture which I though you could see but can't If you need a better picture of what it leads to let me know.





All I ask is that you not hate me because of my paint skills!!
