Looking at first 7.3 IDI

I just bought a tow truck from a guy, and he's got a 90 or 91 F250 Supercab 4x4 with a 7.3 and E4OD trans. He said it ran great, then stalled one day and wouldn't start. He said it sat for a while before this happened and he was told the fuel may have jelled.

Thoughts? I've been looking for a diesel supercab 4x4 work truck and I would be trading my 87 F250LD 351w/C6 truck for it. Both have plows and he just needs a plow truck. I don't like buying non-running stuff unless it's for parts, etc, but it seems like a good trade to me. And I have a tow truck to pick it up with.

if the temps were under 0 degrees when it died, i would kind of agree with the fuel gelling.
if it was over 30 degrees i wound say not likely.
first thing i would do is go over there with a set of good batteries and a jug of diesel.
pull the fuel filter off, fill it up, put it back on, and see if it will fire up.

I like my extended cab but plowing parking lots with it kinda sucks
how do the two plows cpmpare? If what tbe guy is saying is the whole*story, its probably a cheap easy fix.

I'm plowing a 1000' driveway, so not really a big deal with the extra length. Both plows are similar in condition. Mine's a meyes e47, his is a western cable control. I have an extra western cable control pump and a meyers e60 pump. The guy seems upfront and honest so I'm thinking it's an easy fix. I was thinking lift pump or maybe a bad sender.

there are no sending units on the IDI that will keep it from running.
as long as they have fuel, water and oil in them, and 12 volts to the injector pump fuel cut off switch, they will run.

I don't know if the 90's IDI's suffer from the same issue as the older ones where they'll die with a 1/4 tank because the pickup gets uncovered.

All the diesels with "showerhead" pickups suffered from this, even into the first gen PSDs. But indeed, it's the pickup that's the problem, not the sender.

Seems a little suspicious that the dude would just let the thing sit and not try SOMETHING to get it started, after stalling only once. Did he try anything? Other fuel tank? Dreaded ether?

Idk, I've walked away from my junk when I was mad enough lol

If it didn't run after sitting for a while I'd suspect air intrusion, but do what the other guys have said, fuel and good batteries, and let us know how you like your new toy
