What are you guys using to make your gaskets?
I've heard the Right Stuff from permetex works great

I'll be doing my front and rear in a couple weeks

There are issues with this.
For the record, I didn't say that I recommend this.
I did say that I have done it, and I've seen it done, and it worked.

You are saving money by doing the job yourself so a little money on the right tool is not a biggie.
IF you're on the side of the road, trying to get home the 300+ miles, you'll use whatever method needed to get home.

This method was used on a Chebbie w/ a 10 bolt rear. It did get us home, after swapping rearends, on the side of the road.

Posts like that ruin good message boards, and I wish that post could be removed to protect some poor guy.

I instantly smelled fish.
There is no fish to smell.

IF you're that offended by my post that described how you (meaning anyone) CAN fill a differential, then why not PM me, and IF it offends you that much, I'll delete the information.

(That also means that those that have quoted my post, will need to edit theirs, too.)

I'm not against editing my post, but, how do you REALLY think that my post is what ruins good message boards????????

The method may not be the best, but, it does work.

This is correct. Laying on the side of I-95 could be construed as a trail fix.

It pretty obvious the OP isn't laying on the side of the highway somewhere. He is trying to maintain his vehicle like the vast majority of the people who come here. Why you thought the plastic bag thing was appropriate is beyond me. The problem is there ARE people out there who don't know any better and will do stupid stuff like that and ruin parts.

I edited my post.

Now, IF those that quoted me will edit their post (quote), the post will be gone.

Is everyone happy????????

Again, I never recommended that method to fill a differential.

I said that it could be done that way.

Another analogy.........

If I put $15.00 on a table and walk away, is that an invitation for someone to come and take it????

No. I laid the $$$ on the table. What happens next, is the other person's issue.

The problem with it is some people don't know better. They come here for help and see that and do it in their driveway and think everything is hunkey dorey. Now if you had said "This is not recommended.. But on a pinch on a trail.." That's another story.

But as for the technical aspects of it, it just doesn't make sense. Why on earth would I open my diff on a trail? If I do that, I'm in a mess already and I doubt fluid in the diff is going to make a difference. But say you crack the diff, collect the oil in a container, and jb weld the crack. Why not put the oil in the zip lock, cut off a corner and use it like a cake icing cone into the fill hole? Seems much more logical, and with the same tools.*

* Assuming you have basic hand tools, since the alternative was opening the diff.
