gear ratio change on '08 F350 srw w/5.4

After making a big mistake of selling my 7.3 diesel supercab I bought a used 2008 F350 Crew cab srw. I thought with the 5.4 ford only used 4:10 gears but now I learned why it is such a dog and doesn't pull worth 2 cents, it has 3.73 gear ratio. I do want to keep the truck for my son in a few years (when I get a new one with some zip).

I was thinking of having the gears changed to 4.10 or 4.30. Any suggestions would be helpful. I had 4.10 in my '89 F250 V8 gas and it pulled pretty good but was a stick. With the weak 5.4 would 4.10 be enough? Right now with the 6 spd tranny this thing can't get out of it's own way. Also any ideas what an approx. cost would be? (4x4)

I wouldn't go for less than 4.30's and if you have bigger than 17" rims I'd go lower than that. 3.73's + 5.4 + f350 = a f150 can out pull you.

Welcome to FTE.

Cost? Gear sets run about $200, so figure $450 with tax, license, cutting and wrapping.

Labor: $800 to $1200 +

WAG alert, based on other posts here. If anything, I'm low.

I agree. In my old age I seem to make stupid mistakes and this was one of them. I'm leaning towards the 4.30's but like to hear the opinion of others especially if they have experienced the same.

I was figuring about 1500 to 2000. Now the question is Ford OEM or aftermarket gears? That's one thing I have never had to do in any of my pickups.

Back in the day of 15" and 16" rims, three speed transmissions and low revving engines 3.73's were a low gear. Now it's 17" and bigger rims, six speed double overdrive transmissions and high revving engines. I would consider the 4.30's to be the new 3.73's
