1968 Ignition Switch

I have a 1968 F100 that a PO has replaced the ignition switch with a toggle and a starter button. I would like to change this back to a keyed switch. I will need the harness, switch, and lock. The parts for the 71+ trucks are easy and cheap to get. The 1968 harness can be had online but is $50 with S/H and the 71+ is $13 locally. The switch is almost equal price and the lock cylinder is the same.

Anyone with more knowledge than me know of a reason why I couldn't use the later flat terminal style switch and harness?

You want to use the flat terminal one anyways. The original round terminal one had problems. Ford replaced it with a kit that had a new switch and a wiring pigtail to adapt it to the trucks dash wire harness. Still available from Ford. Part number D1AZ11572C.

D1AZ11572C (replaced C8AZ-11572-A) .. Ignition Switch Kit-includes pigtailed wire harness/plug (Motorcraft SW-1054) / Available from Ford.

The plug fits onto the switch, then its pigtailed wires are spliced into the dash wiring harness.

Applications: 1968/69 F100/750 & Passenger Cars / 1969 Econoline / 1970 F100/750 & Econoline before serial number G90,001.

The original switch shorted out and caught fire! There were no recalls back then.

Ford sent the dealers a "campaign letter" notifying them of the problem. It was then up to the dealers to notify their customers. Some did, some did not.

El Jeffe: Have you looked at your '68's ignition switch to see if its been replaced?

Besides the switch, the OP will also need the mounting plate between the switch and the dash, ignition switch bezel and cylinder w/keys.

OK, I will use the later flat style then. Does anyone have the wiring diagrams available for the 68 and 71? I knew I would need the bezel but did not realize there was a spacer behind the dash. I will have to get one with the bezel or make one myself.

Bill, thanks for the info. Maybe this is why the original setup got removed from this truck. I will take a closer look for signs of a previous fire behind the dash. From what I have read online, the SW-1054 switch no longer comes with the pigtail. That is what made me look at the later switch since Standard Ignition/BWD makes all the pieces including the harness.

Is the one pictured above the one you need?

The pigtail wire harness/plug has been furnished with the D1AZ-11572-C / Motorcraft SW-1054 ignition switch kit since day one. If someone told you different, they haven't a friggen clue.

Several years ago, a pal of mine who was an FTE sponsor and a P/M at a Ford dealer in WA was skeptical, because the parts catalog description of the switch makes no mention of the plug/harness.

He ordered one of these switches for a customer, opened the box and VOILA! there was the plug and pigtailed harness.

The thing is, they're not that many people in todays world that are aware of this problem with the original POS switch. But I'm aware...as I was a Ford partsman from 1962 thru 1997.

A pic of the C7TZ-10A885-A mounting plate will be found in the lower pic in post 5 between the switch and bezel. I found 14 of these plates NOS in post 3.

I checked a number of Ford part sites, Amazon, and Rock auto. All of them state that the wiring is no longer included with the switch, on Amazon it is in the reviews. A bunch of them still show the picture with the wiring but if you read the description, they state no longer included. Maybe Ford still had some old stock they were selling?

Here are some links all selling the Motorcraft branded switch.

Are these switches genuine Ford or not? Some gypo (aftermarket) switches didn't come with the harness/plug.

Also notice the prices these sources are asking.

Rock: $29.79 / kmansparts: $46.99 / DM (Dallas Mustang): $66.99.

Ford: MSRP: $49.95 / Dealer net cost: $27.47

FTE has Ford dealer parts dept sponsors that give parts discounts, the closest sponsor to NH:

silverstatefordparts.com online price for this switch: $30.22

Here are two dealers that have large quantities of this switch, call and ask if the pigtailed wire/plug is in the box.

D1AZ-11572-C =

SUNBURY MOTOR CO in Sunbury PA has 12 = 570-286-7746.

USD (Motorcraft jobber) in Phoenix AZ has 20 = 620-253-7111

We have a D1AZ11572C here in stock. I pulled it off the shelf and looked at it. It's a pin style rather than a spade style AND no wiring pigtail. So I had USD (Motorcraft dist) deliver one of theirs to me. Same as the one in my stock. Pin style and No wiring pigtail. ?!

ovalholic, if you find a pigtail please let me know. I need one two. Sanbury doesn't have a box with pigtail in it. JEFFFAFA tried the other place and no luck. If I find something I'll post it here.

ovalholic, if you need a plug with the flat blade terminals I have a source. I got one from a buddy that sells used parts. He has several of the plugs with flat blades and the round pins. Let me know if you need his contact info.

Not any were over heated contact then and still working great.
At the time, I did not have any sources for a new one pigtail.
