I pulled the gas tank today

I pulled the tank on my 05 excursion today thinking that I was going to remove the filter but it did not have a filter. I was able to cut the filler tube in the tank though. I was surprised that the tank was so clean inside.

Nope, your fuel filter is on your drivers side frame rail.

There is a pump "sock" in the tank, but that's all. Why were you cutting in the tank?

It's a dizzle mod, allowing for to the top fill ups. Gassers can't do this due to the evap system.

My 03 6.0 has a filter under the hood too, next to the oil filter.

I'd need a wallet mod to be able to fill up my 6.0

Dizzle mod??

The term you're looking for is Harpoon mod.

The how-to is in the tech folder under the "Fuel" section.

Pulled the gas tank today. . .

Did you have to remove the trailer hitch to drop the tank? I've read somewhere the trailer hitch needs to be removed in order to drop the tank.

I recently changed the fuel filter and found rust in the bottom of the bowl. I took the bowl off and cleaned it out. I'd drop the tank come spring if the trailer hitch was involved. In the mean time I ordered a pre-pump filter (Dahl 100 W/heater) and will install when it arrives. I also was planning to blow out the line back to the tank when I cut the fuel line to install the Dahl filter.

Nope, but the inverse is true. To remove the hitch you have to either drop the tank or loosen the bolts to shift it to get clearance on the hitch bolts. Dropping the tank does not require removing the hitch.

That great!. The rust has to originate from the tank. It made it past the 2 screens in the fuel pick up tube, or they aren't there or are holed, through the pump to be caught by the fuel filter. As soon as I run the tank down to a 1/4 I'm going to drop the tank and have a look see.

This is a tank from a V10, but I doubt the diesel has a different tank.

The Tank is plastic. No rust from the tank itself. The metal around it rusts, but not the actual tank. Only thing metal in the tank is the pump.

The tank is pretty easy to drop too. Just unhook the filler neck from the fender, and it will actually slip out between the frame and body in my experience.
