Windshield Leak-How to Remove Molding?
I need to remove the metal trim above my 1979 E-150 windshield to address the cause of a water leak there. There are a lot of different types of molding removal tools available. Does this one look like it would do the job: Molding Removal Tool
I've never done this before so it's probably going to be a frustrating learning experience.

I'm thinking of doing that as an option. By the way, about how much do you think a thing like that might run? The leak is at the top of the windshield... The thing is I don't know what the problem is, whether it is just the windshield sealant or a hidden body/rust issue. That's why I want to remove the top molding so I can determine what's needed and which way to go.
The windshield has some white fog-like delamination around part of the edges but is in otherwise excellent shape. I'm wondering if the windshield would have to be removed and reinstalled?

Truthfully Clem if this came to me I'd first recommend removing the moldings for a quick assessment of anything visible. Given your year its very, very likely rust has begun and a quick surface sealing won't solve anything.
The white areas of the glass are indeed delamination of a sort, the vinyl layer has absorbed moisture and showing those signs. At this point the best option is replacing the glass, my guess is about $200 for a good quality part and knowledgeable installer. Safelite is NOT recommended for a million and one reasons.
Its nearly certain any attempt to remove that existing windshield will break it--its not that far from cracking or splitting seemingly all on its own at this point anyway.
IF there is indeed rust around the windshield area (aka pinchweld) that needs to be addressed before the new one can be properly installed. What needs to be done depends on the severity of the rust but it could be a light sanding to heavy rust repair---I have no way of even guessing without seeing it for myself.
Sorry I can't be more specific or helpful.
