starter question

Hey all I have a 2006 f150 5.4 4x4 and I believe the starter is shot as I have full battery power but when you try an start it she don't engage just clicks in fuse box, I had mom hit the key with me under the girl with my tester and I didn't get anything, battery is good am I jumpin the gun? I wire brushed batt +,- and starter -, its my understanding theres a ground near there anyone know where and or any other tips, tricks ect. Gonna pull it tomorrow and have it tested but would like to be sure its not a simple fix. Thanks yall

Getting to the top bolt is a challenge. I replied to a thread some time ago describing how to get bolt back in. Search other starter threads for my reply.

Well - we need more info. Not doubting you, but what does "full battery power" mean here? How old is the battery, have you measured it, what voltage after surface charge removed. Not beating up on you, but someone else might read this someday.

One of the problems, a weak battery will sort of mimic a bad starter, the reverse is true as well. It's a lot easier to use a voltmeter and run a couple quick tests than it is to pull a starter and reinstall. A bad starter will really draw down a battery charge, so be sure to put it on a charger overnight or you might end up having to replace both!

One trick to try is banging on the starter pretty good a few times with a hammer, This will usually get another crank or two out of a bad starter, enough to get to NAPA or wherever. The starter motor is grounded through the engine block and the outside body of the starter.

Assuming the battery is fully charged and serviceable you could try a voltage drop test of the positive and negative cables, but an eight year old starter - judgment call. I always try to eliminate the easier stuff as a source of trouble just to be sure, before ripping parts out.

Thanks for the replays everyone. To clarify on the batt is a 5 month old motorcraft 1000 CCA I did try the hammer trick and I just barley tapped the solenoid and it started and I restarted it 3 time without issue so I would say starter is gone can we con cur?? Thanks again folks
Oh and batter tested perfect

Ya, OK. Batt is prolly good.

Check for voltage drop on both positive and negative cables w/voltmeter to be sure, but it sounds like the starter is done spinning.

How about just a bad solenoid? But I remember from years ago that if you hear clicking with turning the key to 'start', the solenoid is working. I guess it probably is the starter.

Hey ted I got the new OEM one from Napa and it was $145 no core! I think it was expensive however I most certainly did not want to do that job again. I must thank you and the others again for helping me learn more about my truck. Take care
