85 E-150 AOD TV rod adjustment
AOD TV rod adjustment
I have an 85 E-150 and need to adjust the TV rod. Either I am not understanding the instructions, or they don’t match my van. Here are the instructions I found here and on many other sites.
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/2...ment-help.html
1- “bend the THROTTLE cable bracket until the butterfly arm bottoms solidly on it's stop.”
Not sure about this?
-
2- “Turn the adjustment screw IN until 13 threads are sticking out the front of the adjuster arm. (Approx. 7/16")”
If I am looking at the right screw, it doesn’t have 13 threads. it’s the screw up, and just in front of the TV rod. Does not have a head on it, just a slot in the end of it.
-
4. “While the engine is idling, loosen the adjustment bolt on the arm on the side of the transmission with a 13mm socket one full turn. Push the arm up (towards the top of the vehicle) and gently tighten the bolt.”
Mine has an adjustment on the rod itself at the transmission.
The pics are off the internet just to illustrate how mine is set up

I had that transmission in an ltd, and played with it quite a bit. The adjustment on the transmission end is the coarse adjustment, and the little screw up top is the one you want to check out in most cases. With the throttle at idle, engine off, the TV adjustment should have it respond almost instantly with any throttle movement. The spec has you use a feeler gage to measure clearance between its screw and whatever touches it on the throttle shaft.
I preferred the feel of it when I adjusted it too tight, so that the transmission never saw idle, and thus had firmer shifts. Setting it too tight like that won't hurt anything, but too loose is bad for the transmission, or of the rod falls off you'll kill it in just a couple miles.

Thanks for the reply Joshofalltrades.
Heres where i am at right now. I replaced the bushings in the TV arm used a gauge to set the TV pressure to 33lbs with a 25/64 drill bit as a spacer at the carb. It was still shifting too late. I adjusted the screw at the carb till i felt 1st and 2nd was shifting right, between 12 to 15mph with just slight acceleration. 2nd to 3rd, around 25mph to 30mph, but OD wants to kick in at 38mph at that setting. So i turned the screw back in 2 turns. from what i have read one turn on the screw is about 1.5lbs. if correct, then the pressure is around 27lbs. Raise the pressure, and it doesn't want to shift to 3rd till 35 or 40 mph.
At that point, unless you feather the peddle, it will shift back down to 2nd. there is no slipping between gears, just not wanting to shift at the right times if the pressure is set correctly.
Currently I have it up on jack stands. It is leaking around the shift shaft and seeping fluid around the front of the pan. I have to drop the drive shaft to replace the center bearing carrier and rear u-joint. Thinking about removing the tail shaft and clean the governor while i have the drive shaft out. am going to change the fluid and filter. I have never cleaned a valve body, but thinking about getting a kit and trying that while i am that far into it. The kit has a step by step dvd to follow.
any ideas? I am not sure about attempting the VB cleaning, but may give it a shot..
