1988 c6 belt adjustment bolt won't tighten

So I've been reading through these forums, and came across the tranny belt adjuster. My bolt adjuster will not tighten to 120lb/in. Unless I tighten the locking nut first. To my knowledge the locking nut must remain loose untill the adjusting bolt is torqued. Then the nut is then torqued to 35-45lb/in.
Please help.

You back off the retaining nut, then tighten the band adjustment to 120 inch pounds or 10 foot pounds. You then back the band adjustment off 1.5 turns, and then tighten the retaining nut to 35-45 foot pounds.

The only problem is that when I back off of the locking nut and torque the adjustment bolt it never gets to 120lb/in. It just keeps going in I'm afraid the bolt will just fall into the tranny.

Did you back the adjustment bolt off before starting? It sounds like you may have unhooked the band from the inside, or your band is broken.

Are you using a real inch pound wrench?

That bolt is engaged into a strut, and the strut is on the band as well as a hinge point I believe. It sounds like one of 3 possibilities, here goes.

1) band it cooked, and all material is worn or burned off thus leading to excessive clearance which will not allow for proper adjustment

2) strut is no longer in contact properly with band, adjusting screw, or case

3) Might not be a C6. Probably is but could be the E4od.

If it needs a band, it might be possible to cut the old one and roll in a new band without tearing the tranny down or removing it from the vehicle. if the strut is bad on the servo side, that might cause this problem as well good luck.
