V10 Life Expectancy

Well been driving my 147k 2003 V10 Limited for the past month and love this truck more than any vehicle I have driven the past 30+ years. My motor and transmission appear to function flawlessly and have been averaging 12.5 mpg on my daily commute.
Plan on keeping this one for a long time - with light use (I generally keep her under 2000 rpm and do not tow or haul any significant loads - how many miles can I expect from the original motor and transmission. I have always had great luck with Fords - had a 95 Taurus that went to 250k on the original drive train. Would definitely do a rebuild when necessary as the rest of the vehicle is rock solid...

Great question, I just walked into one with 172k, seems mint. I'll also keep this one awhile. It is so useful for me and the fact that it makes hippies cry for clubbed baby seals makes me enjoy it that much more.

I have family with 2v V10 Econolines in his business fleet that have 600+ on them with only regular maintenance. A few A/C compressors here and there but that's about it. Original transmissions

Mine has 200K. I run full synthetic, change every 8K. Trans service about every 40K. The only issue I've had is 2 alternators and now I am tracing down a electrical drain somewhere. I'll be working on it again this afternoon and this is by far the most significant repair I have had to make. PITA

I've found most V10 Excursions make it about 147,000 miles before breaking down.

My 03 V10 has 194K. Replaced the alternator this year and I think I'm due for both transmission flush and injector cleaning. Up until 2 years ago it was averaging 16mpg on trips, 14 combination driving. Currently it's 14.5mpg hiway, 11.5 towing.

Since I drive more than 24K a year my main concern has been gas prices. I'm considering retiring the Ex to tow duty for shows and picking up something that gets in the mid to upper 20's for daily use. At more than $5000 year in gas in the Ex it's a move I need to make. I'll just miss the daily comfort of the Ex.

I used to drive even more than that but for the last 1.5 years my new job greatly reduced my daily commute. Now average about 12k miles annually. My wife works from home so I can use her car as well to decrease the use of the Ex. Looking to get her a Solara Convertible once our current leases are up - should do pretty good on gas.

Keep the RPMs down for fuel economy if you like, but don't think you're making the engine last any longer. Fleet vehicles are typically driven anything but carefully, and these engines will almost always outlast the rest of the truck in demanding applications like these.

As long as you change the oil and don't overheat it you will wear out most everything else before the engine. Not that this will happen any time soon.

I have 220k on mine with only repairs being two alternators other than regular maintenance. Would LOVE to see 600k!

I sold mine with 228k last year and last I spoke to the new owner he was at 30k over that. No major issues just manifold studs and little bs stuff.
Great engine!

It entirely depends on how money you're wiling to dump into it. Preventative maintenance is a big thing, but the engine should outlast the body with proper care. Wheel bearings, U-joints, or general rust can easily go and expenses start piling up long before the engine.
