Starter,neutral safety switch or ?
The 2001 7.3 excursion wouldn't start today. There is power to the lights etc. When I turn the key I can hear a relay, solenoid click. No engagement of the starter. I was late and I didn't get chance to see if there is power to the starter. It is the original starter 210,000 miles.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Perform a Voltage Drop Test to see if the Solenoid is receiving System Voltage when the key is turned to Start. If so, it's the Solenoid / Starter. Often, the Solenoids can be cleaned really good to restore them. They're just a wrapped electromagnetic coil with a single shaft in the center.
If you don't see system voltage within .5 VDC look for a wiring / resistance issue.
If it's the starter. I hear good things about the Denso High Torque. Don't know cost or anything else. But several vehicles I work on have them and the owners say they love them.

I was the starter.
I put in a Auto Zone starter from a later model 7.3. Seems the Denso is the starter of choice. For around $300 plus. 1 or 2 yr. warranty on line. That was 2 or more years ago when I did the research. I purchased an Auto Zone starter for around $240 several years ago. It was on the shelf ready to go when the OEM with 220,000 miles quit. It has a life time warranty and can be replaced with no hassle. It might take a few days to get one if you ever had an issue. I kept my old starter and will replace the solenoid and check the brushes. It will be good enough to get me by while I locate the free replacement if that were to happen. The Auto Zone starter is a Mitsubishi copy. I has 3 attachment holes and is a high torque starter. The old starter only had 2 holes. If you have the two holes were the bolts go then you have the old design. There is a 3rd hole in the block for the this high torque starter. I purchased bolts from Ford to obtain the 3rd bolt. I used the 2 bolts that were with the old starter and one replacement bolt. The old bolts fit the treads tighter then the replacement bolts. The new starter is a lot quitter then the old starter ever was. It is almost 1/3 longer then the old starter. The 7.3 now starts like a gas engine.
The part# from Auto Zone is. DLG5154.
The paper work that came in the box references the starter as a Mitsubishi M8T50072 Planetary Gear Reduction starter 3 hole attachment points. . The paper work also references the Nippondenso starter that looks like the starter that came out of the EX. 2 hole attachment points.
Thanks again for all the help FTE. You guys give us PEACE of MIND knowing the brother hood is willing and ready to help.
