I have a 92 F-150 with a 4.9 6 cylinder. I replaced the starter and the relay on the fender well. All wiring is in proper position but the new starter wont disengage. When i start the truck it starts fine then the starter stays engaged until i shut the truck off. Original problem wound up being a bad connection at the battery so the replacement of the starter and relay was unnecessary but now have this new issue. Could the starter just need to be shimmed out and if so where do i find these?
So what happens when the starter is stuck and you pull the trigger lead (the small wire) off of the fender solenoid? If that makes the starter stop then you either have a bad ignition switch (more likely) or a wiring problem (less likely).
Do as dixie says and pull the small wire off the fender mounted solenoid, if the starter still stays engaged I would say your new starter is defective(the drive on the starter not kicking back out from the flywheel).
Pulled the trigger wire and there is no change. This is the second starter from autozone i put in yesterday. The first was defective. Maybe th he second is as well?
Take a multimeter and see if the relay/solenoid is fused inside, if it is it will cause the starter to run continuously.

On my last Ford truck it had the 300 and I went to AutoZone for a starter and had the same issue. It would not disengage due to the fact that it had the incorrect splinedrive (longer) and could not disengage the flywheel. There is an industrial starter that uses the same body and the longer splinedrive. They get confused often I am told at Napa where I finally got the correct one. I do not trust A-Z.
Just got back from autozone replaced the relay again. Bought there shim kit. Neither did any good. Starter still does not disengage. Next step may be to buy it somewhere else then. Hate auto zone.
But there was no issue before i changed the relay and starter. When i changed the relay and starter is when this problem began. Because of this i dont think the issue is inside the cab. It only arose when i changed the relay and starter.
