I'll second that! Makes the filter heavy and harder to thread on, but cranking the engine without oil pressure for soooo looong can't be good. Might even be more than weak batteries can handle.

 

There a couple trains of thought on that. Filling the filter through the center hole sends unfiltered oil directly into the engine, and straight to the bearings. Some manufacturers have started recommending not filling the filter for this reason. Personally, I've always at least partially filled the filter, but I might do it a little differently henceforth.

 

Interesting. Sounds crazy. Let's assume we're filling with new oil. It's unfiltered, yes, but new and unlikely to have crud in it. If the fear is random manufacturing debris in the filter, and it's in the side of the filter we'd be filling, then it will get flushed into the engine either way. Debris on the other side will be filtered. I think some lawyers just needed to justify their jobs.

You can think whatever you want. I'm just repeating information from elsewhere. But whatever oil comes out of the hole in the center of the filter has not, in fact, been filtered. It is sent to the rotating assembly.

 

New oil in the crankcase goes through the filter before it's pumped out to the bearings.

However, you have no basis for being so, and you might not understand how the lube filtering system works if you believe Pikachu said something stupid.

In this case, I suspect he is right, and you are not.

The filters I use come sealed in plastic, but not all manufacturers do that. Any foreign material that could get into the inner part of the filter (through the BIG hole there) would be able to go through the lube system without being caught, and I have heard of it happening with rust particles.

Like everything else common sense comes into play when filling a filter. No dust or dirt on your oil jug when you fill the filter and be careful when threading the filter on. Me, I like having instant oil pressure to the bearings. Came from my old days as a diesel mechanic and the engine had to fill the oil filters that would equal 2-3 gallons of oil.


Back to the original question....anyone use the new Blue Donaldson ELF's on their 7.3 yet?

 

I realize I'm very late to this discussion, but...Then you need to hear more. The guys changing oil on the Detroit 60's, ISX's, ISM's, and ISL's at work are doing the same thing. Do I agree with it? No. I'd just fill the filter with the perimeter holes instead of the center one.

No need, that oil get's filtered before it's pushed to the bearings and such.

 

Yesterday, I changed the oil in my 02, 7.3 went to screw the filter on and it wouldn't install. Filter hit the pan and cross member. Now, when I first heard about these large filters I read on a thread that the Cat 1R-1808 or equivalent would also be accepted to the oil filter base. That's what I used, since I already had one available. Looks like these filters are rather bigger in diameter than the elf7405.
Looks to be the main issue of the install.

The Caterpillar 1R-1808 seems to be a 135mm diameter filter, it crosses to a Donaldson DBL7505, no way that's going to fit on a 7.3.

However, the Donaldson DBL7405 (replaced the ELF7405) is 118mm in diameter, and it will fit.
