1950 F4 front axle change

I completed an easy front axle replacement on my F4. 1975 Dodge motorhome solid axle with disc brakes. All that was required was to fabricate adapter plates from 3/4 inch thick steel plate. Drill to match Ford spring U bolts and Dodge axle spring pads. No decent photos at this time. I located a set of 8 bolt 16 inch rims to fit the Dodge hubs. Half inch wheel spacers were necessary to allow wheels to clear brake rotors. If I recall correctly the 16 inch wheels came off a Ford truck. (I forgot model).
The stock Ford drag link was cut to fix a clearance issue. The cut ends were threaded to fit a tie rod adjusting sleeve. This allowed the drag link to be rotated to fit the Dodge axle. If any of this is interesting I will see to getting photos.
A 1975 Dodge motorhome differential is the next project.

VERY INTERESTING. Please tell us more. Pictures and documentation would be great. Did the axle come from an M400, M500, or M600 chassis? Were the rotors and hubs eight lug? I am assuming the adapter was to match the spring width to axle width? Will your new rear axle come from the same motorhome? How about overall front axle and hub width. Is it wider than the Ford? How about the master cylinder, what did you use? There are several of us on here playing with the larger Ford trucks. As you probably know, brake components are hard to find and drums are not available.
By all means, pictures and documentation, please. And, if no one has done it yet, let me welcome you to the forum.

Is the track width close to the F4 or wider? Pics would be great!

If the hubs of the motor home had 8 x 6.5" pattern they were not from a Class A model M400/500/600 of that era. They'd have the 5 x 8" hubs with disc brakes. It's likely from a Class C motor home. I too am eager to see pics of this swap. Stu

Yeah, Stu, I had a 72 model motorhome on the Dodge M400 chassis and if I remember right, it was the five lug. Were some by chance built with eight lug hubs??? But weren't the class C motorhomes all on the van configuration chassis with IFS? Sure will be interesting if the OP comes back and documents this.

I've not come across any M400/500/600s with 8 x 6.5" pattern, but I guess there could be another model that I've never come across. If the Class Cs are all IFS that would suggest there's more to know. I have a set of the 5 x 8" front hubs and disc brake components from a 1980 +/- M series and hope to one day figure out how to adapt them to the spindles of an F-4/5/6. I had the D70 rear out of one but let go of it to an F-5 owner near here. It's a perfect fix for the rear having a 4.56/1 ratio. Stu

There were some small class A motorhomes built on the 1 ton chassis' that used the 8 lug hubs, like this 23' Allegro with the 360 motor'

What the dimensions would be, I have no idea.

Small update on my axle swap

The salvage yard does not know what series the Dodge was. All they have was "1976 Dodge MH". And, it had a flat front. The bolt pattern is 8 x 6.5" if I measure right. I will take a mess of photos but am not sure how to get them on the forum so I will have to play with that. No master cylinder decision yet.
I have the F4 engine running and the rig moves but no reverse!

I'm really interested in this swap. Pics would be great, I'm more of a visual type versus the read it and figure it out type.

Mmmmm, pictures. Looks like the wheels will stick out a bit. I kinda like that, gives it a tough ole truck look like the concrete trucks. In the one pic is that an aluminum spacer? Was that needed to clear the discs? Would the springs from the donor have worked instead of the 1/2 inch plate? So many questions, I'll be keeping an eye, well maybe both of them on this build.
