I hit a deer back in 1972 in a new Maverick Grabber. He jumped off an embankment on the side of the road and I hit him before the touched the asphalt. The trooper that worked the accident said that if the deer had jumped a fraction of a second later, he would have gone through the windshield. Guess Lady Luck was riding with me in that respect.
Did nearly $800 in damage to a car that cost a little over $2800 new a few weeks before.
I don't know about other parts of the country but deer are very abundant here in Tn. I've seen 12 or so in my front yard frequently. Managed to photograph a couple one afternoon playing in my front yard not far from the street.
I think people would slow down a little if they realized what was lurking just off the edge of the road especially at night.

I was born in Clarksville, and I don't remember deer being that plentiful. Of course, that was a long time ago... in a land far, far away. You know, last century...

They show up in my yard just about any time of the day.

I came within inches of hitting a bull elk who was "gettin' busy" with a doe right in the middle of the road down south of here. I was in a 90's Z28 doing 70, late night, would have slid right under his belly and he'd have been in my lap. 1200 lbs of meat doesn't just bounce off. Can't imagine what the antlers would do. After that, I don't drive after dusk in the mountains. The damn things are the same color as the road, too.
