Cylinder Head Distortion Check
  1. NOTE: Do not measure for cylinder head distortion along the length, across the full width, or across a diagonal of the cylinder head. These types of measurement will provide inaccurate results.
    Measure only the inboard surface of the cylinder head, from the push rod openings to the outer edge of the exhaust side of the cylinder head.

  1. NOTE: When checking the 13 locations on the combustion chamber sealing surface, keep the Feeler Gauge Set away from the valves area as they may lead to incorrect measurements
    Check for distortion only at the 13 locations shown.

  1. NOTICE: Avoid running the tip of the Feeler Gauge Set into the Gauge Bar (or straightedge). This may cause damage to, or distort the tip of, the Feeler Gauge Set. The result may be inaccurate readings.
    NOTE: If the Gauge Bar is not available, use a calibrated straightedge that is calibrated by the manufacturer to be flat within 0.0127 mm (0.0005 in) per running foot length, such as a Snap-On® GA438A, or equivalent.
    Place the 0.1 mm ( 0.004 in) feeler gauge on the cylinder head at one of the specified locations. Then place the Gauge Bar (or straightedge) on top of the feeler gauge. Lightly press on the center of the Gauge Bar (or straightedge) while checking the measurement.

  1. Attempt to pull the feeler gauge out from under the Gauge Bar (or straightedge).

  1. NOTE: If a location is measured to be out of specification, verify that all carbon deposits that may influence measurement accuracy have been removed with a brass scraper and re-measure.
    NOTE: The cylinder heads used on the diesel engine cannot be resurfaced. Do not attempt to machine or resurface the cylinder heads.
    If the 0.1 mm ( 0.004 in) feeler gauge can be easily pulled out from under the Gauge Bar (or straightedge) without resistance, the cylinder head is out of specification and must be replaced.
  1. Repeat the cylinder head distortion measurement at each of the 13 locations shown.

I didn't shave the reman Ford head last week. I was going to take a video shaving that one,, but that head only had 3.73-3.728 thickness so I opted to not shave it. I was dumbfounded at how skinny that Ford head was.

I'm familiar with the procedure also. Just wondering what's up with srmastertech going directly against that procedure on one of his videos. He's got sr master certs. Here is one set to ponder.

That cutter is a diamond cutter and it CAN'T be beat. Especially being right down the street. Lol. That video I took of the Ford reman head showing the thickness,,, that CONFIRMS that Ford shaves heads. I just torqued another set yesterday live online.

Really curious as to why Ford doesn't want the total measurement??? I would say that they want the head to be able to flex to fill the gaps. I really dont want that chunk of iron flexed while being under operating pressures. Kinda like y pipes that aren't aligned properly and need flexed to line up to the turbo. Also like my opinion as to the lowered degas level. If you run the coolant level low,, and have bad hg's,, it won't necessarily blow coolant. Are they just masking the issues? If you have non compromised hg's,, and run coolant at the max level,, it won't vent. I do keep all trucks at the low level tho. Just some thoughts.

Oh,,, I hear ya. I've just seen so many of these heads look exactly like the ones in the videos. I don't just blindly cut them tho. I keep the valve recession at 19-22 (try at least) and the thickness needs checked too. That Ford head thickness was a game changer tho.

Many of Ford's decisions on what to do or not to do are based on flaws in the Navistar designs. Cutting heads too much, then the pushrods are too long, cutting too much, then the intake manifold bolts have a rough time fitting correctly are a couple that come to mind.
