Head Flatness Check TSB 06-21-10

I am a bit conflicted about milling my heads since I don't currently have any head concerns.

Cheesit has mentioned in the past that Ford says its OK to just put them back on if they are within specs. I am curious about the success rate with doing that? I guess that would also depend on whether studs were installed or not....

The cost of having the heads milled isn't the concern, but rather removing meat off the heads unnecessarily is, not to mention the down time. The other concern is trusting a shop to ONLY remove the bare minimum.... I have also tossed around the 1 at a time method, since I have the gaskets on hand if that method fails.

Then I look at the TSB stating to use SNAP-ON straight edges and feeler gauges... REALLY??

What scares me with milling heads is you will be in essence lengthening the already too long pushrods. I would definitely replace all the pushrods with the new updated ones that are .050" shorter to eliminate broken rockers and/or lifters.

The replace one at a time method is tried and true in other areas of the engine world, no need to shy away from it if all things considered the engine is healthy.

1). Find a 6.0 saavy and competent machinist
2). Have the heads machined FLAT with the least amount of material removed possible. Deck height spec. is 3.74" IIRC.
3). Use the shorter pushrods.
4). Enjoy.

I wish Anthony's machine shop is closer!! I know we have shops that will do a good job I suppose, but none that have tons of knowledge on the 6.0 that I'm aware of.

I already have the pushrods in the tool box. Just lacking a few minor gaskets and glow plug harnesses.

Tim, do you have anyone over in Ft Smith you trust?

Well, there's straight, and then there's Snap-On straight.

The straight edges are nice,,, but I mainly like them because of the cases!!! Lol. I like it when a manufacturer takes the initiative to help me take care of their products. I have quite a few things in the shop I refer to as "grandmas china". I'm just as picky about my stuff as I am about everything else. Sometimes it makes me hard to get along with. Just ask Julie. Lol.

The .004 spec across the entire head surface is a tough one to accept. I check the block with a .0015 feeler,, and sofar I've only had one block not check out. But I've had many heads that don't check out. I might get burned from you all,, but if the .0015 feeler goes under,, we shave heads. .004 is like a freakin mile!!!

That's why I was curious about the success rate. Have you ever NOT shaved a set of heads? I think I know the answer...
