Idle problem

I got a pretty good deal on a 88 f-350 with a 5.8. It's has a few quirks that need to be adressed. The first one I want to fix is an idling issue and I'm looking for some advice. It starts right up, runs for a few minutes, the idle goes all over the place, then it dies. When I drive it sometimes it happens at stop lights it's intermittent. If I throw it in neutral it never dies. What could be causing this? Iac ? I'm sure it could use a tune up. The person before me didn't take very good care of it.

Welcome to FTE.

Does the idle go above a normal idle, as well as dropping low enough to stall? If so, go for idle control etc. If it does not exceed normal, but just wanders, read on:

My truck had similiar symtoms, would start off with a higher-than-normal idle, then eventually drop low enough it would chug then stall. Turned out to be the map sensor.
