2014 F-150 Odds & Ends...

Just got a 2014 F-150 after 13 great years and 206,000 miles in a 2002 F-250 so I'm getting used to a different animal!

Trying to get started and need some help...

First, I need to get a new toolbox for the bed since my old drop-in tool box from my F-250 won't fit down in the bed floor of the F-150! Recommendations???

Also, (this always started a war in the diesel forums)...favorite 5W-20 oil, oil filters, and air filters among late model 5.0 F-150 owners??? Like I said, all I've known for a long time was Delo 400 and Fleetguard filters so I'm going back to the drawing board here!

Thanks for your help!!!

Hello! Where I cannot help with the toolbox...I can say that most people here agree to use Motorcraft oil (including myself) It is a synthetic blend and protects great. A lot of us also have oil analysis tests done on our oils and have had no adverse effects. I also use the OLM to let me know when I need to change the oil...from my last oil analysis they recommended stretching my milage to 11,000 miles befoe changing the oil. Of course that was milage mostly not towing so that would change the interval some.

I cant help on the toolbox either, but will say that if it were me I would look for a low profile one instead of one that sits above the bed rails.

I have used Motorcraft syn blend with a motorcraft filter on my 2012 5.0, and never a problem in the 54,000 miles on it, nor are any expected. On an oil related forum I frequent, this oil among many many others have been tested and has excelled in almost every UOA up to 10,000 miles. FTR though I change mine out every 5,000 miles because......old habits die hard.

I have never in the past used a dealer for oil changes but I can't beat the price. $49.99 Motorcraft synthetic blend oil 7qts and filter, top off all fluids and rotate tires and check PSI . I can't go wrong. Plus it looks good for warranty.

Like 5.0STX I use the Dealer for oil changes. I've had no issues at all using Motorcraft Oil & Filters. In fact because I am a regular customer I've received some bonuses along the way.

Yeah, if could find one that fits down in the bed as opposed to over the bed rails that would be preferable...didn't know if you guys might have some suggestions or preferences on brands, etc...

I've always (with few exceptions) used the dealer for oil changes for my F-250, but I would bring my own oil and filters...always so much easier and quicker to let them do a 4-gallon oil change instead of me...ha

oh yeah...guess it's time to change my signature...it's a little out of date!

I use the dealer for all oil changes. I like the report that I get when the work is done, it's almost like a mini state vehicle inspection report.

I don't let the dealer rotate my tires anymore, they dinged a wheel pretty bad and had to replace the wheel as it couldn't be fixed. No one it seems uses a padded prybar to remove the center caps and this mars the wheel even more.

As for the box, the last one I had was a cross bed box and I really liked it but it sure took up a ton of real estate.

I have one that is below the top rail and I picked it up at Pep Boys. Most stores will let you see how it fits before you pay for it.

During the 36 month warranty period I always went to the Dealer for oil changes but since then I use the local Valvoline instant oil change stations, superfast in under 20 minutes, they check everything just like the dealer, always have a coupon I can apply and I get the invoiced sent to me by email.
I change the oil too often but with more in-city driving these days I feel better about doing it, every 3500 miles.

Can't help you with the box.

Congrat's on the '14.

my work truck has a low profile rail mount box on it from TSC. complete garbage. BUT they were being cheap and bought the least expensive one they could find. i think the more expensive ones at TSC are probably OK.

our new 2013 and 2014 trucks came with boxes from Adrian Steel and they are Top Notch boxes for sure! i don't think they make an in-bed box, though.
Aluminum Truck Toolboxes - Pickup Truck Bed Tool Box by Adrian Steel

you get what you buy .... buy cheap and pay for it forever, or pay good money once and enjoy having a quality tool.

Oil filters: Stock Motorcraft, buy them cheap at Walmart
Air filters: Stock Motorcraft, order off the Intarwebz
Oil: Motorcraft Syn Blend 5W20 (red bottle), or Mobil 1 if you want to upgrade.

My 09 has 155K on it running Mobil1 and MC filters and runs great. My father's 10, which ran the same, was recently traded in with 225K on the clock. No problems either.

Pick your favorite API 5w20 oil and you'll be fine. If you plan to go by the IOLM then I would stick with MC syn blend or better.

The oil filter is a no brainer, though. Stick with the motorcraft unit.

I have a Delta tool chest that was in the F150.
It is about 18? x 24? x 48.

Have fun with the new toy!

"First, I need to get a new toolbox for the bed since my old drop-in tool box from my F-250 won't fit down in the bed floor of the F-150! Recommendations???"

- Seeing that you now have the box, and assuming that it is still in good shape, could it be modified to fit your new truck?

"Also, (this always started a war in the diesel forums)...favorite 5W-20 oil, oil filters, and air filters among late model 5.0 F-150 owners??? Like I said, all I've known for a long time was Delo 400 and Fleetguard filters so I'm going back to the drawing board here!"

- I've used Valvoline full synthetic oil in my last two trucks (5W-20 in my 2012). This one, after doing two short interval changes when new, I set the monitor to 60 percent and go from there. With my driving, that gives me two changes per year.

- I use Motorcfaft oil and air filters.

Take Care
