Crush Washers?

Hi -

I will be installing an Offenhauser 4 bbl intake manifold and factory Ford dual exhaust manifolds on my 300 six. I have read posts referring to "crush washers"? Are the crush washers the thick cupped washers used on the factory single exhaust manifold? Can they be reused or is it better to get new ones?

Thank you in advance.

Dan M.

Yes, They are the thick washers that provide a little "springiness" to the clamping joint. They can be reused. I like to slightly chamfer their edges so they don't dig into my aluminum intake lugs.

Thanks for the reply. Should I add regular flat washers on top of the crush washers? Do I need any type of lock washer?

Thank You,

If you want to use the crush washers, definitely reuse the originals, since last I checked, Ford wants about $10 ea. for them. With 13 washers, that comes to $130. Ouch.

As for me, when I did mine, I ordered a set of super thick washers:

https://www.nutty.com/EXTRA-THICK-Gr...ers_c_427.html

Those are some hefty, heavy duty pieces too. I wasn't sure the size I needed so I bought 13 of two different sizes (both around 1" in dia). They worked great.
I got them a little bit bigger than the stock crush washers because they spanned the ears of the manifolds a lot better. The stock ones seemed to just want to nip the corners, which I didn't feel safe with.

Thanks for the tip! Just an idea, but could I use standard thickness grade 8 washers underneath the factory Ford crush washers?

Thank You,
Dan M.
