68 N-850 Again

Just wondering if anyone knew the actual weight rating on a 1968 N850 single axle truck. I know the title says 25,999 lbs to keep it under cdls but I am wanting to know just how much it would actually haul behind it. It has air brakes and air to the rear for a tag along trailer. Thanks again.

What does the warranty plate say?

Without looking it up, I think you can tow up to 10,000 lbs without tripping the CDL limit.

Go to you state's DMV site and check.

Make sure your brakes and the trailer brakes are 100%.

Your trucks capacity is what the rating plate recommends.

Many people under register what would be and IS considered a class B truck. Doesn't matter if you take a rated 40k truck and license it at 26k or not, in the eyes of the DOT it is and will always be a 40k class B truck, unless it is rerated by the manufacture or a licensed custom body builder / truck modifier, and another (in addition to the factory one) rating plate / safety certification label is applied denoting such rerating with that modifiers name on it.

Just FYI, some people do this and get away with it until such time as the first full state DOT inspection, then they can be ticketed / truck parked / impounded if they do not have the proper class B CDL

Unless it is farm use, then a whole different set of rules apply, or in some states where if registered it is considered a private vehicle (definition of a commercial vehicle is being in commerce).

But back to your truck, single rear axle, probably somewhere between 20 to 34k but YOUR truck's rating as it is optioned recommended capacity is on the rating / warranty plate.

There is no defined / standard chart or capacity for a given model year / truck model, they all vary on these medium and heavy duty trucks. And for a given truck model, they can vary by quite a bit. It is possible to have a 700 or 750 model rated higher than a 850! You could even n some circumstances have a 600 series rated as high as a 850, all depending upon the optional equipment and payload package.

That's what I wanted to know because I am in the process of getting my cdls but for the time being I am gonna run farm use tags on it. The guy before me had it titled at 25,999 lbs so he didn't have to have his cdls. As long as u are hauling a dozer or etc behind it they usually don't mess with single axle dumps around here too much.

Don't know where you live, but around here farm plates are exempt from
anything ya don't even need mud flaps. get some chickens and be a
farm boy. lol You want to get extreme, I see guys with farm plates at the
plant getting asphalt and paving driveways ? but they are doing it and dont
even have to stop at weigh stations. My liar boss gets stopped for 50
in a 30mph. cop oh farm (plates) just take it easy, reason milk machine broke.
(milk machine) this guy dont even have chicken, cat or cow. ok

Haha I'm in Virginia. I especially like the farm tags on minivans and brand new 50 and 60 thousand dollar trucks. Bought truck but can't afford to pay the taxes to get tags for it......priorities are a little out of whack. I reckon it's the same here as anywhere else get away with it till ya get caught.

WA state is pretty draconian now on the DOT rules, I just talked with a tow truck drive that got written for $5800 in tickets, that all started because he did not have DOT #'s on his one ton. Yes, it was licensed above the magical 16000 pounds in this state where the cutoff is.

The full inspection that resulted by the "flag" of the truck for not having DOT numbers even went down to inspection of the kingpins for looseness, one which was slightly loose. The truck was impounded on the spot as well, more fees to get it back.

At least in this state (at least west of the mountains where farms are not as common) it is best just to comply because if or when you do get stopped, the book will be thrown at you for sure. Revenue collection I imagine being the biggest reason.... have to pay for those new weigh stations somehow!

But I also agree that if a truck is unsafe, it should not be on the roads, so defiantly a fine line between safety and revenue generation for sure.

O yeah it's all about making money for whatever government agency they're working for. Here you usually see troopers a lot toward the end of each month...old joke was that they have to meet their quota for tickets. A lot of times they'll pull ya over for a tag light or ssomething petty just to see if they can get more money out of ya.

Finally got around to messin with my dump truck.... Capacity plate on driver's door says 25000. Had to rewire all the lights, as well as the two speed rear switch. Never had encountered such a mess, it looked like the previous owner must have made someone mad because all of the wires looked to be cut after being yanked out. Anyway, found that the shifter was way too long to change gears so after some head scratching I found that there wasa pipe drove down on the stock shifter. Have truck running fine, no fluid leaks, lights all work. BUT, I have yet another problem...the exhaust on the passenger side is loose and more than likely needs a donut gasket. Does anyone know if there are parts readily available for these trucks? NOS? Aftermarket? Any at all? I also need a speedometer cable as well. Gonna check NAPA and Fisher because guy at Advance Auto looked at me like I had two heads when I asked about parts. He said "N-850?" "Isn't that a tractor?".

Ended up gettin the truck exhaust done. Drove it yesterday. Had a guy at a muffler shop flare me two pipes and had em bend the three inch pipes to match the old stuff. Had to cut the flares off and weld em onto the others. Made two flanges with a plasma cutter at work and bolted em up. Sounds great. Have some issues with the speedometer but have to dig into it a little more. When ya can't find parts, make em.....haha.
