2011 Gasser vs. 2008 Diesel - New Member Purchase Advice

Hello,

I've been using this forum for the past few months to help me narrow down what truck I want/need. I was hoping a few of you guys who've been driving these trucks for years could help me pick which truck to buy. I've only owned two F-150's but never a super duty and the primary reason I'm going with a super duty is to haul my wife's new horse (yes, I realize it's overkill with a two horse trailer, but the wife wants a gooseneck and maximum safety). I will be hauling a approximately 1-2 time per month, less than 100 miles. Trailer will be a gooseneck two horse trailer with a GTWR of ~7,300 lbs, but more often than not will be in the 5,000 lb range (only one horse). We live in Houston, so not a lot of hills. With that said, I've found two trucks that fit my budget, but I'm not sure which to go with. Btw, when I'm not hauling I'll be doing mostly city driving (live near downtown). Here are my two options;

2011 6.2L Gasser Crew Cab
$31,700
43,000 miles
Lariat options

2008 6.4L Diesel Crew Cab
$31,000
61,000 miles
Lariat options

The main trade off here is less miles - gasser or more miles and diesel and I'm torn. Any help would be great!

Based on what you plan on using it for, I would go with the gasser.

No brainer. Buy the gasser. Personally, you couldn't give me a 6.4 without a warranty.

Without a doubt, get the 6.2L.

The gasser will easily pull your weight, and it offers great reliability and lower overall operating costs. I'm not as familiar with the mileage of the 6.4, but in theory you'll be getting slightly poorer mileage with a gasser than a diesel, but not enough to justify purchasing a diesel for your needs.

The only real advantage you'll get with a diesel over a gasser is being able to get your load moving quicker... which with live cargo isn't the best idea anyway!

I would highly recommend the gasser.

I really appreciate the help guys. Quick question for those of you that posted, when you say it's a no brainer - get the 6.2L, why is that? Is the 2011 model just a better all-around product?

Gasser also... You can also buy an extended warranty for the gasser about 1/4 the price of the same warranty for the 6.4 (which you WILL need)..

The 2011 is the new generation truck. Many improvements over the previous generation, not only in looks but in the entire construction process.. It is just a better truck IMHO..

Gas all the way for your needs. Put money in your pocket, not a funnel at the bottom of it.

Stop and go traffic does not work well with the 6.4 PSD.

For what you are doing the 6.2 gas motor will serve you well.

Distance and heavy towing is what the PSD is for.

Gas 6.2L. For some reason many people here think a 'diesel' HD is the only way to go...when I'd bet the gas 6.2 would satisfy the needs of at least 75% of the diesel buyers. Sure, the 6.7L diesel is a great motor - compared to the 6.4L its a no-brainer...the 6.2L gas. I went this way, no regrets.

I have a 6.2 gas a gooseneck horse trailer. Many hills here in pa . Loaded about 7500lb . Up and down hills 75mph no problem . About 9.7 mpg not much worse than a diesel . Atleast my other diesel . Yep alot more ahead of the game i am with the gas.

The 2011 6.2 is way better than the 6.4 with the "soot bag" and all of the maintenance headaches. Gas rocks.
