Couple 302 questions

I picked up a 71 Ranchero with a 302 that water got into the motor and it's locked up pretty good. I also have a complete 5.0 out of a 98 Mountaineer I was going to use on another project. Will the an C-4 bolt up to the newer 5.0 block? Just eyeballing things they look the same. If I ditch the fuel injection off the newer motor will aftermarket heads and intake go on the 98 block ok? I'm also considering just dropping in the whole Mountaineer motor and keeping the fuel injection. Will I need to fab motor mounts? Again just looking they look similar.

Bell to engine is a match. However, you have to watch your balance, as you will need a flex plate to match your exisiting C4 and...well, read here:

Ford Flywheels and Flexplates

Aftermarket heads and manifolds will work fine on that block.

If you do bring it over with EFI, bring the trans too. It is a 4R70 iirc, and those are pretty good. Overdrive, baby!!!!!

That mountaineer motor is capable of making ~300hp with nothing but a cam change to one with about 10deg more duration, the stock cam has 254/264 seat to seat duration BTW. And yeah it's a direct bolt-in with a 50oz C4/AOD flexplate and any modern 4bbl intake will bolt right on once the EFI stuff is removed.

Transplanting the EFI system from the Mountaineer would be a PROJECT, beside all the powertrain wiring and computer from the vehicle you need the fuel delivery system, the dash cluster, the trans and a rear axle with a VSS sensor. So yes it's doable but not a weekend job.

The 98 motor has GT40P heads which are pretty good heads but the different spark plug angle will present some fitment problems with headers and exhaust manifolds. The cam in it works great with a carb. Even better with 1.7 rockers. If you have a small bell (case fill-157 tooth flexplate) C4 then your only choice for a flexplate to mate the two will be the aftermarket (B&M and others make the 50 oz/157 tooth flexplate) as there was never a factory flexplate for that combo. The pan fill C4 used the larger 164 tooth flexplate which also was used in the AOD. You will need to address the FEAD too here (Front End Accessory Drive) You can swap everything from the timing cover forward onto the 98 block, or adapt the Mountaineer FEAD to the Ranchero.

I think I'm going to try to keep the newer accessories with the serpentine belt.
The Main problem I see now is making sure I use the right flexplate and there's nothing on the new engine to mount the shifter linkage to so I will need to fab some kind of bracket. Not a huge deal. Also, since the motors all apart I was going to put a new cam in too. I was thinking the Ford racing E-303 I read it will work with a carb pretty good.
With all this heartburn adapting the older C-4 to the new motor I'm wondering if I should just step up to a better newer, trans? I don't have the one from the Mountaineer, It was an all wheel drive anyways. Suggestions?
Her's some pics

The B cam wouldn't be my first choice.. not even my 20th, I'd suggest the Comp 35-320-8. Depending what rear axle gearing the car has an AOD might be a option, with it's super deep OD ratio it would allow you to install 3.55 to 3.73 gearing and still get good cruising fuel milage, but any core you pick up would need a complete rebuild with all the upgrades and a shift kit.

Yea, that motor's going to need more than a new cam. With a carb on it, you can use just about any cam, the only limiting factor is the springs. The stock cam works great with 1.7 rockers if you're looking for a daily driver, but if you want more, then go for it.

If you choose the EFI route I would strongly second the use of the 4R70W transmission that came in the Mountaineer. That eliminates the discussion about the flex plate and substitutes lots more entertainment. All that invokes lots of electronic conversion that I just went through. Here is a link to the notes of my life with that subject.

Turbobricks Forums - View Single Post - Volvo's That Run Chapter 12 Electrical, WIring Harness, Fuses and PCM

That information directly pertains to a swap into a Volvo but would apply in most regards to any vehicle. And the PCM uses the transmission OSS to manage shifts so rear end change out is not required. The VSS is for 4wd management.

I'm going with the C-4 for now. at least until I get this thing on the road again.
It's going to be carb'd for sure. I ordered a manifold last night. At least for a while. I may put aftermarket injection on it some time in the future.

Good choice. It'll work well on that 'sploder motor and cam.
