1990 f250 302 acting up

OK guys yesterday I was driving around the majority of the day and the truck ran just fine. Then suddenly it started chugging like crazy and died and I rolled it until I could pull off the road. I tried staring it and it just died right away many times, so I started looking under the hood and I popped the distributer cap off and bent the little metal piece on the top of the rotor up and it started up and ran just fine. So do you think I have a different issue and the rotor was just luck or can the rotor cause that?
