Stainless steel unison rings

Howdy all,

Has anyone been running a replacement Rotomaster turbocharger long enough to see if the stainless steel VGT components have eliminated the sticking unison ring/vane problems?

I've wondered about this also. I'll be cleaning my turbo soon, and was contemplating which one to use if it needed replaced.

Generally speaking, stainless is a softer metal than steel. This could lead to a higher probability of "wallowing out" the slot.

Yeah. I would wonder about that too, although they might be using a "hard" or tougher grade of SS.

Part of the problem is the snail is still going to be cast
iron. I want to see what happens so please keep us posted
if you are going this route.

I believe the stock Garrett ring is also stainless steel. It was not corroded at all in my turbo, the center section and the hot housing were deeply pitted and unusable.

I only have two months on my Rotomaster. You're going to have to ask in five years or so...

BTW as far as I can tell all unison rings are "billet". They mill them from a solid piece on a CNC machine. The unison ring and the vanes themselves were completely reusable on my turbo, it was the cast iron parts that totalled it.
