Major dumb question here!
My house has a crawl space. When I built the house 30 years ago, I had left over siding, tile etc. that I wanted to keep so it all went in the crawl space. It is a mess down there. Yesterday I opened the bilco door to go look for something and saw about a 4 foot long snake down there that hid right away. It was black with gray stripes going sideways every 1-2 inches. It hid so I tried to find it thinking it is not a poison snake. I can't find it and I should get it out of there. Any ideas on how to do it? I was thinking of dumping a lot of cat cr*p all over. It keeps ground hogs out of the garden since they are enemies. Maybe it would make the snake leave. Also I have no idea how it got in to start with.

Well I have 2 cats and 2 dogs. A crawl space full of snakes might not work too well. Although it might be funny if my pain in the butt neighbor wants to borrow something and I tell him it is in the crawl space, and for him to just go get it.
Besides that if my significant other finds out there is even one down there I might be here alone.
Does anybody know what kind it is? I never saw anything around here besides black snakes and garden snakes. Never anything with gray stripes.

Back in the old politically incorrect days, we used to be able to shoot rats at the dump with .22s..........I have not one use for them, they used to cannibalize the corpses of their own dead even while they were under fire, disgusting filthy animals.

Come on, Keith...........Snakes (non poisonous anyway) beat the filth, disease and damage of rodents hands down any-day.

Dave, my friend, I am not doubting you, nor arguing with you.
I too, have spent many a Friday evening, at the dump, dispatching rats with an old Remington "Nylon 66".
I'm not afraid of snakes........ I just don't like 'em.
My list of items that should have never made it to The Ark:
• snakes
• mice
• rats
•cockroaches
• politicians....... no wait....... nevermind. I think I covered this one, with the top four on my list.
• flies

I have a terrible snake phobia...I am talking panic mode here.
I agree with Keith. Burn the house to the ground. Stir up the ashes and pour mass quantities of flammable fuels on them just as an added security measure.
All snakes have family. You may want to consider burning your neighbor's house as well.

Yeah I'm with the "burn that house to the ground......" crowd----the only good snake is a dead one!
For me the thought one is living under my house AND could/will one day find it's way upstairs---NO THANKS!!
Besides all that even a non-poisonous snake would kill me---just from the heart attack of discovering it somewhere near me!
