Transmission help
Hey guys first timer here
I just picked up an '02 sport trac on a very good deal (well I think so at the moment) shes had it.pretty rough and it shows.
Anyways 280k miles (yes, 280k)
And the PO said he just replaced the transmission but its still acting up.
The symptoms are:
Drives fine but definitely a miss some where shifts good so far except when you want to park.
No park at all. No drive either.
Just N R 1 & 2
I seen someone with a tranny for $400 pulled but im wondering if its cheaper to just rebuild (if possible)
Im kinda stuck on this and would love some tips on maybe troubleshooting to know for certain that theres no way to get this thing fixed cheaply and easily without swapping or rebuilding. Thanks in advance for any advice fellas

Welcome to FTE.
Did you get a good price because of the transmission? Or was that a surprise that was not disclosed?
I take it this is a 4.0 SOHC motor with the 5 speed auto.
$400 isn't even enough for a core charge for one of these.
This transmission has several weak spots.
Are you a trans tech?
Usually we are talking several thousand for these transmissions. You can get a quote here or elsewhere if it comes to reman'd trans:

thanks for the reply,
i knew about the no park issue but was not able to drive it because a charging issue with it.
basically the alternator kept getting fried as well as the battery and would lose power as you tried to take off
i took the alternator out and put it back in when i noticed the clip on the back was unplugged (voltage regulator?)
anyways when i plugged it in i was able to drive it home (20 mins or so) but the alt and batt are too far gone at this point
and yes its the 4.0 SOHC auto
the trans is out of a running 2000 explorer, i believe its interchangeable right?
im not a tech by any means but im always trying to teach myself by putting in the work
alongside someone who knows more about it
got a couple friends who are very good with transmission work
but if im not picking up the wrong signals here, $400 for that trans is good as long as it is interchangeable?

Check it through several sources before you make the jump.
IMO, having had this trans for a number of years, I would not install a used 2000 trans without going through it. They are all subject to the wear and servo bore problems which are fairly easily fixed with a rebuild.

Well after a long couple days of hardcore plumbing im trying to find time for the truck
I crawled around underneath to find that one shackle was completely rusted out so picked one up to replace.
Trying to find some local quotes on the tranny rebuild. Too bad I dont live closer to any members on here that are trans techs right??
Really getting anxious to fix this thing just to enjoy it!
Will try to update asap
Also: having a charging issue
The battery was just bought today and the alternator tested at advance auto
Other than the alt. Throwing a spark when they hooked it up, they say its running just fine.
But when I hook everything up, I get the battery level at the lowest level possible and the battery indicator is on. Checked all fuses and they all seem to be good.
Anyone have some advice on some things to check?

Update:
I talked to a transmission shop and a friend of mine who both were convinced that the issue is not the Transmission itself.
Seems like the consensus was that it must be a problem with the linkage or a cable.
The gear indicator? On the dash seems to be kinda screwy when you pull the shifter, as in you have to kinda listen to the gears to shift into them. The arrowjust seems off.
I guess this opens up the possibility of the shifter or something attached to it is broken or loose.
I used to have an 85 f250 that did the same problem but you could always find the gear after listening to it.

Look at every electrical connection.
Remove the connections and make sure they are clean.
Both ends.
Check for body ground straps. You mention a rusted item. That can go along with corroded connections.
As for the shift indicator. Look under the dash on top of the steering column.
I have found loose screws holding the lever to cable. On some models there is a tube that cracks.

Finally found it!
One stupid hidden wire was corroded, spliced it together and bingo.
As for the trans problem, had a buddy of mine look at it and he said the parking pin snapped.
$300 in labor at the local shop to fix it ($20 pin) because they might have to drop the t-case and pan to get to it. Gotta love that lol
Guess im going to throw a block in the bed and park on flat spots until I feel like fixing that !
