What is this and can I remove it?

Hi,
New Excursion owner. 2000 with the 7.3. Love it so far! I was wondering if someone could help me with the purpose of this rock catching piece of metal hanging down and tell me what would happen if I remove it? It is on the crossmember under the back of the transmission.

Thanks!

And there is another one above the rear driveshaft that I am not as worried about...

It helps dampen NVH, Noise, Vibration and Harshness. Leave it be.

No worries meaning there is almost no way to search on the forum for "odd metal cube under truck bolted in place" and get a result Leave it alone. There's a company (TritonPower.com) that makes a carbon fiber one though so you can drop 7 pounds of weight off the truck and still have the vibration dampening. It's like $350 but I love mine! Woke my 5.4 up and I eat 6.0's for breakfast now.

You'll feel an immediate lack of "*****" after you remove that.

Ok, I read somewhere that our Ex's had something to keep us from driving right over another car in a frontal crash, and I just thought that "strange metal cube thingy" we are talking about was it. . Not that I thought it would do much, but hey....

You're thinking of the crash bar at the front of the Ex under the front bumper.

Not too silly really. The crash bar keeps the Ex from doing what you thought, but the CIA tracker/ballast thingy does keep the shiny side up, working in conjunction with the crash bar when it does its job.

I took mine off today to get to something else under the truck and forgot to put it back. The truck won't start and it's throwing a CEL now! The code is 423GOV23NSA. Anyone have any ideas on this? I reinstalled it and everything is fine now but it seems odd...
