No power under a load

I have recently started working on our old family truck that has been sitting for a while. I rebuilt the carb a 1406 edelbrock. The truck idles great but when I put it in gear and start to drive it hesitates and stumbles horribly and has no power. When I turn it off it continues to run for a second or two. Then After it gets warmed up it also it very hard to start almost like the the distributor is out. The mechanic that put a new motor in was a family members friend but I don't think he was all that great. Anything might help thanx

I'd start with checking the timing and the dwell.

To me it sounds like a lean condition. Check for vacuum leaks or collapsed fuel lines....but since you rebuilt the carb I would also go over of with a fine tooth comb.

Timing and dwell if you have a points type ignition is also a quick easy check that should be verified before getting to deep in to anything else.
