Gearhead Tuner and Tunes

Has anyone ordered an SCT tuner with preloaded tunes? If so, what information will they need to preload them? PCM strategy or VIN?

The preloaded "canned" tunes will not require any additional info besides year, make, model, and engine. The "custom" tunes, that you can have loaded for you when buying a tuner from some of the companies that write their own tunes, will require your current strategy in order to write the tune...

I cannot take credit for this but I think it's a great anology!

Factory tunes = buying a suit off a rack
Canned tunes = giving the tailor your measurements and having a suit made for you
Custom tunes = going to the tailor's shop so that you can be measured and fitted and choosing the fabric for your brand new suit

Thanks, the custom tune is what I am referring to. Their web site states they can preload the custom tunes before shipping the tuner, they just need some info. I wanted to have that info when I order it. So if it's just the strategy they need, I will get that info pulled. BY THE WAY, I did try to contact them, no response as of yet.

Thanks again!

They shipped mine to me preloaded with the custom ones.
But I had already sent Matt the PCM strategy I was running
along with year and model. Everything came out happy.

Sean

EDIT : I always get someone at http://www.gearheadautomotiveperformance.com/ when I call them.

That's what I like to hear! Which tunes did you go with?

Right now I am just using the 8K tow tune. I also play
with the SRL tune but find it hard to keep my foot out of it.

That's the 3 I'm going with, but may also get the SRL+ for when she gets studded...

Have you ever tried to see what kind of mileage you can get out of the SRL?

8K and Unlimited (which is a trans only tune) show better highway MPG than the SRL for me.

Still get the best highway MPG running bone stock, even compared to the Gearhead Unlimited or canned SCT Trans Only.

With the Canned Performance Tune I can still get 18+ mpg versus 20+ stock.

Interesting, thanks for the info. I'm shopping too, maybe I'll hit up Vivian for a looney tune instead.

Awww yes the Looney Tune. I like the Looney Tune, I also have a "Looney Mild" which could be compared to in between the Canned Street and Canned Performance Tune.

With my 6.0 the Looney Tune is a raped ape, with a light switch effect from mild to goddamn.

The SRL is more daily driver friendly with slightly less kick than the Looney.

I have pretty much stuck with the Gearhead 8K as my DD.

I think it was about 19 MPG on a trip to and from Portland. Had a hell
of a time keeping my foot out of it.

I got 18.5 on the 65HP canned tune. 15.5 on the street performance and the SLR+ is giving me around 17. All of that is mixed driving town and highway.

Oh my dear Watson, you've given me even more to think about. For a little reference, do you have an early or late 04?

Thanks, i appreciate the input!

BTW Shane, sorry to hijack your thread.

trucks a late 04. This isn't out of line with some of the other posts saying they get better mileage on stock or near stock tunes. I've never run stock since I've owned the truck, I like the extra power.

They need every mod you can give them to better the tune, even mods you don't have like injector size, your driving habits. I even told them I want the torque convertor locked up in 5th and 6th gear ASAP so I don't keep getting an un-lock if I step down just a little to pass without shifting to 5th.

Matt even re-adjusted the tune to tighten the smoke control because a slight increase in throttle made a bunch of smoke around the 35-50 MPH range, not a puff but a cloud. Fixed it first try.

The SLR+ is so sick.... I can't keep in the throttle because the truck is sideways! The 8k tow was a pretty good daily driver, firm shifts, good power.
