The mother of invention.......
Check this out. I installed a barrel tank in the bed of my truck. I made the mistake of sealing up the sending unit with huge gobs of silicone. It sealed up nice - but.....huge gobs of silicone get sucked into the fuel line & kill the truck!
I've been stranded 3 times now - even after I thought I'd cleaned out the junk.
I needed another plan.
I picked up a brass nipple & had a brake line on the shelf. I stuffed the brake line into the nipple & soldered it in.
Then I cleaned it up some
& cut off the excess brake line
Then I attached a screen to the end - this way any remaining gunk in the tank can't get sucked into the end of the line.
I used aluminum tape - It took a couple of tries to find something that would work - I used a fare tool to spread out the end of the tube to give something to grip - once that was there the screen attached really tight.
The truck fired right up - I know its not perfect - but I bet I don't get stranded by silicone boogers any time soon!

The solder does not bother me.... just the tape. Hell a piece of stainless wire twisted tight would give you a better solution. If I was on the side of the road....I would have skipped the screen and said you did great.
A much better filter would be an in line type. That way you can service it and replace as needed.

Usually tanks with a bottom outlet have about an inch-long standpipe so all the crap that collects can't get into the line. This appears to be almost a 6" long standpipe? Unless it's horizontal.

I didnt mention that part. I have an inline filter just oilutside the tank.
Nothing can get into my engine.
I agree the tape is cheezy. I tried a zip tie but that didn't work.
I soaked the screen & tape in gas for 30 minutes & it didnt loosen. Maybe it will after a forever soak in gas. The aluminum screen is twisted on pretty good & with the flare at the end of the line it will stay in place. The tape was more a suspendrrs & a belt

This fuel pick up is horizontal and about 1/2 inch off the bottom of the tank.
I have cleaned silicone boogers out 3 times. more keep appearing. Im not going to pull the sending unit as any reinstall will net me even more boogers - silicone or otherwise.
I thought it was a good fix for what it was. It got me back on the road reliably.
I like the idea of using stainless wire twisted to hold it on. next time i have an empty tank i may just pull it out & add that to the fitting.
Sorry for the confustion with my pics - they all loaded sideways for some reason.

This tank is made from thick steel - much more sturdy than the one it replaced - & if there is an accident God forbid, its not sitting inside with me.
No - I do not plan to put a tank under the bed - I have a reese hitch back there - I had investigated the under bed tank before going this direction.
