NP 205... Or, not...?

So my 79 Bronco Is supposed to have an NP 205 TC right? Recently, looking into other resto/rebuilds I notice the other t cases don't look quite like mine but they are confirmed to be 205s. After more research I cant find any NP 205s that look like mine. So my question is what DO I have then? Ill post pics in a couple hours but for now I have some numbers off a tag on the side that read: "D9TA 7A195 NA" then a line below: "03 06 79 1 203" I can make guesses to what these numbers are but don't know much about this stuff. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Looks like you have a np 203, but I was wrong once about 37 years ago so I cant swear to it.

okay. thanks. any ideas why the hell I would have a 203? isn't it generally accepted that 205 is one of the best out there? you think the PO just had one laying around when the 205 blew up? or is this a common thing?

You could order the 78/79 Bronco with full time 4WD or part time 4WD. The full timers were NP203's. Back in the day...a popular kit would convert the NP203 full time 4WD to part time. You got a few transfer case parts and a set of lock out hubs.....OR...someone in your Broncos past, swapped in a NP203 out of an F series pickup.

(I think you even got a sticker for your transfer case shifter **** with the conversion kit.) I think Mile Marker made the conversion kit.

Okay. So I actually did some research and found what you just said. I guess I was just confused because, well, I have a shift lever AND a 203. So the PO either converted the original 203 to part time or swapped in an originally part time 203? I also never had the **** so I don't even know the pattern. Now though, my only concern is that I haven't driven anywhere in 4 or with the hubs locked and I read that that is the only way to lubricate a 203. Thanks for the help guys.

Edit: So for some reason I was under the impression that if the 203 was full time, than it wouldn't have a shift lever. Obviously I didn't consider high and low range. I assumed that the presence of the shift lever meant the 203 was converted. Guess not. Okay, so I do have manual hubs but there is still a possibility that the 203 isn't converted and I've just been driving around in 4h or 4h loc but the hubs have been free. The easiest way I can think of determining if I do have a converted 203 is jacking up the rear end, unlocking the front hubs, shifting through the t case gears and seeing if anything turns the rear but doesn't turn the front driveline. Any easier ideas? Am I still missing something?

Have someone look at front driveshaft as you creep along and see if it turns

Or, if good help is hard to find or you prefer to do it on your lonesome, stick a piece of masking tape on the front driveshaft, pull up a couple feet, look at tape, pull up again and look. If the tape never moves, the front shaft isn't turning.

Thought of that but its just me and myself. However, I drove down the road with it in every position and one position (second to last back and what I've been driving around with previously) I couldn't hear the front driveshaft turning anymore so i'm assuming this IS IN FACT 2h. Is it a problem that I can hear the gears/driveline in all other positions (4x4)?

EDIT: wrote that last one before I saw your post torky. Good idea though.

That doesn't work because sometimes the shaft turns even when it's not in 4x4. (Friction) Just reach under and try to turn it. (Wheels unlocked)

So reviving an old thread because I need a new spedo cable. Turns out I do have a converted 203. LMC sells the cable for 20 bucks but there are 3 different options. "part time 4x4", "full time 4x4" and "lower cable"? I assume i should order the full time 4x4 spedo cable even though mine isnt full time anymore, but i am not sure. I still dont know what kit was used in the conversion but I wonder if anyone knows which cable i should buy?
