Shell T5 10-30 + Archoil 9100 ...Just back from 2200 mile unexpected trip
#16
The closer I got to 5K on both, I noticed the power falling off. Throttle response and mileage progressively got worse. I decided to try Mobil 1 5w40 and my truck seems to like it as it's more consistent throughout the interval.
Both my trucks have always been this way:
-Neither one likes Motorcraft, anything Shell Rotella, or Valvoline.
-The 7.3 prefers Chevron Delo, Castrol Tection Extra, Mystic 15W40
-The 6.0 prefers Mobil 1 5W40 so far

A 61.9 / 10.75 viscosity is unusual IMO. In all of the UOA I have done and all the oils tried, I have never seen any 5W40 that low after 5000 miles (had a 63.4 and a 64.2 w/ Valvoline PBE, one 63.4 w/ T6 and ZDDP, and a 63.3 w/ TDT and Archoil at 6k miles - all others over 66). What oil did you run before the Mobil 1 oil change? One theory I have heard discussed though is that the early HPOP was harder on oil than the later ones - I wonder.

I run Royal Purple 20W-50 synthetic motor oil in my X since I bought it with 13K on the clock. It now has 120K on the clock. No HPOP, injector or turbo replacement. I have RP tranny fluid, Synchromax in the transfer case and 75W-140 Max Gear oil in the diff. All have AR9100 for the past 6 months. I normally change motor oil at 10K to 12K intervals.

My old motor was this way and I always changed it by starting/stiction/injector "issues" rather than mileage. It liked 15w40 Motorcraft better than any synthetic so that's what I ran. This motor isn't that way at all. If I didn't watch the mileage I wouldn't know that the oil had 5K on it at all.

For an oil sample...The viscosity at 100C....is that the upper viscosity #? (as in 30 on the 10-30?)

The viscosity of virgin T5 10W30 is somewhere around 11.5 to 11.7 cSt. So a 4200 mile viscosity of 9.8 cSt, shows some significant shearing - almost down to a 20 wt (9.29 cSt). I assume that you did not have any significant fuel dilution?
