old fuel in IDI
My idi when i stopped driving it 3 years ago was running really good, now it dies if i rev it up and the idle is not as rock solid as it was back then, the same fuels in it and it smells like thinner..
i changed the fuel filter, but seems to still be the same deal.
Im leaning towards it being the fuel is going bad..
what are your guys experiances with this?
probably should drain and fill with good stuff huh?

When you changed filter did you put fresh fuel in it and did it run better for a few minutes?
First thing i would do is change the filter and fill with straight Diesel Kleen injector cleaner run it long enough to get it into pump and injectors and let it sit a day. Could be injectors sticking because they haven't been used in years.
Test the bad fuel therory by running a hose from pump to 5gal can of diesel and see how it runs then. If it runs good fuel is bad or lines (not as likely i think). If it still runs bad then its time to take a good look at the pumps and injectors.
Your fuel pump could be bad and not supplying enough fuel. It can also let air in.
If you have a any rubber fuel lines before the pump they could have dry rotted out and the pump may be pulling air in.

By dieing when revved, do you mean you step on the pedal, it starts to pick up, then dies?
or you blip the throttle, and when you release the pedal the rpms drop like a rock then it dies?
I was having the second problem with my 'new' truck. All of a sudden that symptom appeared. It would idle ok, and drive fine, but could not return to idle if the throttle was just dropped. The rev's would plummet rapidly (normal above idle rpm) but keep going until dead.
All I did to solve it was drain the filter, refill with ATF, run it for about 30 seconds. Shut off and let it sit for a day. Next time it started, still had issues, so after running less than a minute I shut it down and let it sit for another day or two. Then it ran fine, the ATF cleaned out something in the injection pump.
However, if you feel your fuel is bad (which isn't too likely for regular diesel), you should drain the tanks and replace with fresh diesel. Unless it clogged, I don't think you'd need to replace the fuel filter again, but just drain it and refill with ATF as mentioned above. Diesel Klean works too, ATF is probably cheaper and more people have it available so is widely used.

i ran 500 gallons of free 10+ year old fuel through my 88 with no problem.
i would fill the fuel filter with ATF and run it for 30-45 seconds then shut it off and let it sit for at least 24 hours to loosen up the crud in the injector pump metering circuit and the injectors.
it should run much better after the ATF treatment.
i do this on my truck once a year, and it makes a world of difference, especially with the worn out injectors and pump.
