Can I start my engine without the tranny installed?

I have a truck that has sat for 5+ yrs because I killed the 5spd. Just had it rebuilt and wanted to start truck prior to taking to shop to have tranny installed as he would then charge me a few more hundred to start the truck and not take the care I would (change out filter, bleed lines, let starter rest between tries, etc.)

I know there is a safety switch somewhere so you can't start without the clutch in, but the clutch is laying on the ground! All I have is the engine to the flywheel. Everything else was removed, even the starter for some reason.

Can I fire it up prior to tranny install?

If yes, please provide details on what I need to do...no acronyms please and diagrams if I need to find something. I am only partially knowledgable on fixing vehicles.

I have read about suggestions on how to start if there was a tranny...only need the info on making go without a tranny. I had a friend that removed the tranny and he said it could be done if we by passed the safety, but he had to go on a long vacation....

thanks

The starter is installed onto the bell housing, so you need that attached to the engine. It also needs to engage the flywheel, but it sounds like that's still there.

Some cars have the starter switch connected through a switch on the clutch pedal, which requires the pedal to be depressed to complete the circuit. So you should be able to just push the pedal down and turn the key. Otherwise, if you can access the starter solenoid, you can just short the big stud connect to the battery to the primary coil terminal with a screwdriver to engage the motor (key on, of course).

Thanks.

My quick look underneath I assumed starter was attached to the engine part....but then I guess it wouldn't engage the flywheel. I will just drain and refresh fluids prior to taking it in and just be there when he starts it to make sure he doesn't burn up my starter.

If the trans is removed, but the bell housing, clutch and flywheel are still installed, figure out a way to bypass the clutch pedal switch to start it. Do not push the clutch pedal with the clutch installed and the trans out as the trans keeps the clutch plate centered. Without the trans the plate will fall out of alignment. Not an unrecoverable issue, just adds another thing to correct later.

Apologies, I didn't answer your question.
