external temp sensor

Lately my external temperature readings have been off first thing in the morning. It will register up to 20 degrees cooler that actual and rather rapidly correct itself after 10 minutes of driving. I'm thinking I might try getting a new sensor and see what happens. What's really strange is my son's 2008 f250 v10 started doing the same thing.
Anyone else run into this?

Not that I recall reading ever.

The sensor is located beind the bumper on the passenger side. It's kind of funny looking and is a quick release from the harness. Maybe the size of a C battery.
