In all my vehicles I find that non-ethonol fuel gets me from 5 to 10% better fuel mileage. A stock car driver says there is more btu (energy) in gas than alcohol.

That's correct--but a gallon of E10 (10% ethanol and 90% gasoline, not counting additives) has almost 97% the energy of a gallon of straight gasoline:

~116,000 BTU/gallon of gasoline, ~76,000 BTU/gallon of ethanol.
