starting electrical issues
i have a 1977 f150 4wd with a 351m , for whatever reason it's been hard to start. my 1st thought was bad carb , changed it with another one i had , same issue . changed the ignition switch cause mine was broke on the back same issue , now it wont start but when you let off the key it hits, so i swapped the solenoid with one from my 78 f150 . no change . change boxes and coil still no change ..
I know it has a power drain , but i dont ever have a battery in it for that reason . i am just at a loss at what it could be .. The 78 has a 460 in it and it fires every time i go to start it no issues any help would be great ..

Please describe, in detail, what "hard to start," and "it hits" means so that we are on the exact same page. What do you expect the truck to do, and what does it actually do? You know what "hard to start" means because it's happening in front of you, but I'm not there. Does that mean it's slow to crank, or it cranks but does not actually fire off on its own, or something completely different?
What are the details regarding said power drain? What are the actual symptoms that have lead you to this conclusion?

well the hard to start when it would start would be cranking for 10 seconds or more then it would start now its not doing anything , i have spark and fuel something is screwed some where The "hit " would be trying to run , i am almost ready to pull that harness out and rewire it, if i leave a battery hooked up to it it drains it ,i cant seem to track it down either

How is this different than "not doing anything"? Or is this part of the description? What is "trying to run?" The engine fires, but stops?
I'm not trying to sling you out, and maybe I'm just slow, but I still have no idea what you're trying to say and we're 4 posts in now. Please, very clearly, state exactly what happens (or doesn't happen) and the conditions behind your observations. This needs to be all in one post consisting of two or three very clear sentences. Don't use terms like "anything," "nothing," "screwed up." I can come up with all sorts of definitions of "nothing" and "screwed up" and they're guaranteed to be very different than what you have in mind. I understand words like "starter cranks" or "headlights illuminate" or "click sound is emitted from under the hood."

it turns over fine but its not even trying to start until you let off the key, but as of today it won't even try to start, everything works but combustion and rotation , i think i have a break in a wire somewhere , but i guess what i am asking or trying to ask is what would cause the delay in starting when i release the key.
I may take the engine harness out of my other truck that runs and plug it up not running one, may help me find the problem, if it is the harness i know where i can get another one

The most common cause of the case where the engine cranks without starting, but fires briefly upon releasing the key, is a faulty distributor pickup or ballast resistor. You can test either using a multimeter.
The fact that the engine does not even crank upon turning the key to START, yet all other electrical accessories work, points to the starting system. You can begin by reporting the voltage at the RED with BLUE stripe wire leading to the 'S' post of the solenoid while a friend holds the key in START.
A multimeter is required for me to help you any further.
