Do I get a 6.4??

Are you planing on tuning and deleting, or are you just going to leave it alone?
If i could get my hands on a 6.7 i would, both trucks are great but in light of a 6.0 or a 7.3 your looking at a whole new beast with a lot more maintenance.
Not saying that in a negative way, these newer trucks just require a little more attention..

Only repeating issue I've had, after the delete is the damn belt tensioners, just had both needing replaced this week, that is at least #2 for one of them if not both. Still it is 10x more reliable than the '05 6.0L it replaced. I do feel they must be deleted in order to have a chance at them being reliable. Fuel filling the oil pan isn't good no matter how you try to spin it.

My cousin has been a long time Ford diesel tech (since '93) and when asked about his experience with the 6.4 PSD his recommendation is to stay away from one, unless you have deep pockets $$$$.
In addition I typically stop by the shop he works at during hunting season to visit, and just about every time, there would be a 6.4 PSD in the black box being shipped back to be rebuilt. The amount of engines they would have to replace was crazy.
Now that most of the 6.0 PSD and 6.4 PSD are out of warranty the amount of Ford diesel techs that worked "only" on diesel powertrains have dropped almost in half.
Most people who own these first generation DPF equipped trucks don't really know much about them, they don't monitor the fluids, they don't know about oil dilution and the negative effects on the upper end of engine, they don't tow occasionally to keep the emissions system in check, they don't realize that the truck is constantly regening, they don't change their fuel filters, they neglect the maintenance, etc...etc... and they are usually the victims of a serious or catastrophic engine failure.

Just seems like a lot of opinions to me....especially if you haven't actually owned one... now when you said 2 pass on it.. you could've said unless you plan on deleting it...lol! I was waiting for the part where you say "my 6.7 is the best truck I've ever owned" It's funny most guys on here whatever truck they currently own is "the best truck ever" even 6.OHHHNOOO guys... you have a lot of statements like the diesel work force cut back 2 half.. any proof on that one?? Then the ole shucks every time I stopped by cousin's shop there was a 6.4 being worked on... kind of funny to me(who knows how people treat there truck wherever he was located.... RM has a lot of miles on his truck...yes deleted(quite a few 6.4 owners on here happy with there trucks...but does deleting change everything on a truck?? I've had good luck with mine...yes deleted...but I change oil every 5k/ fuel filters 10k , water sep monthly , fuel treatment... I think we all know they all have there pros/cons... I just figured he would want to hear from someone who has owned one... or currently drives one.

I also owned one of the most feared and unreliable diesel trucks... The 6.0 PSD! I owned it for 7 years with 170k miles no major issues other than an oil leak... but I was lucky! Would I recommend one... the answer is simple.... No!
The OP was asking how the 6.4 PSD turned out and based on my knowledge (never owned one) I would steer clear.
Just remember the exception is not the rule.

[QUOTE=Troy Buenger;14679566]No opinions just facts I share on his experience wrenching on these trucks and I don't recommend deleting either, but that's a personal choice and risk that the owner should not have to make. In addition I believe I was one of the first reporting here when the 6.4 PSD started having rocker arm wear/knocking that many had not heard of yet based on what my cousin reported to me.

Well I hate to but your opinions are not "facts" different strokes for different folks! The "fact" that there's thousands and thousands of 6.4's still driving, working, racing every day would mean your incorrect. If I we're to ask for an opinion of a motor/truck... I would want the input to come from someone who has owned the truck...maintained the truck...learned the truck. Seems to me there would be quite a few of the exceptions that you speak of regarding these trucks. One mechanic cousin or not can not speak for the entire country/beyond of trucks running just fine. Quite a few of the 6.7 guys loved their 6.4's on this forum....and here locally.....just my 2cents...we can agree to disagree!

Basically the #1 issue with the 6.4 is that Ford sold it without proper clarification of what to expect from a DPF truck with a mechanical HIGH PRESSURE fuel pump. Still don't give proper customer training with the 6.7 as far as I'm concerned.
As with anything where time is involved, the Ford flagship 6.7 has gotten upgrades over the years where the 6.4 was basically left to people like me and a bunch of others to figure out. True many of the 6.7 owners were previous 6.4 owners, some stock, some tuned, and a few here or there that wish they still had their 6.4.
The 6.4 isn't really a pickup truck engine, it's a medium truck motor, still used by the company that produced them for Ford. A 6.4 in stock trim is best used to work, not idle, not a grocery getter, or a soccer kid transporter.
A 6.4 tuned can pretty much do whatever you want to do. It can make WAY more cheap horsepower than a 6.7 could dream of and with good proper fuel systems care can be a over kill>>> whatever you want it to be.
The truck you buy is totally up to how deep your pockets are and how your going to use your truck, personally my pockets aren't deep enough to own a new KR 6.7 but a used 2008 6.4 KR with a little fooling around was very affordable for me, so that's what I have. good luck to you on your quest, do your due diligence and I'm sure your be happy with whatever you end up with.

Let me state again... I'm not stating my opinion but what my cousin has reported to me on these engines is factual. He's used to work on these trucks every day and only helps when a Ford tech is out, and he see's first hand the good and the ugly. When he is asked about purchasing a 6.4 PSD his response is clear and to the point to not purchase one unless you have deep pockets.
Like you said most won't say anything negative about their current truck and it's clear you fall into this category.
The OP asked the question and now has to decide "do I feel lucky?

Seeing's how you seem to not have a great understanding of what a fact is.. I thought I Would help you TROY.. see the problem with your argument is that I'm disputing your theory ... just because cousin carl didn't like the engine doesn't mean everyone on planet earth has 2 hate them 2! ALSO I never said these trucks/engines we're perfect... I hate the fuel mileage, possibly the radiators if that ever happens.. and anything else that will go wrong with my truck.... LISTEN GO BACK 2 THE 6.7 section and argue with all of the other 65 year olds about who hauls the most mulch home from home depot... or who loaded the most kids in their truck on the way home from soccer practice!!!lmfaoooooooooo now if you want to talk about trucks that work hard...and have a lot of un-godly horsepower with minimal mods, then you shall open your mouth take your foot out of it...and insert your 2 cents sir
