Is there any way of telling the gear ratio from the vin number?
No, not directly.
if not, is there any other way to find out besides the axle tag??
Yes.
1) Axle code on the door jamb sticker
-- C9 = 3.55 Limited slip
-- C5 = 4.10 Limited slip
-- 39 = 3.55 open
-- 35 = 4.10 open
2) Jack up both rear wheels and mark the driveshaft. Rotate rear wheels one full turn. Number of driveshaft rotations is the ratio. Then rotate one wheel. If the other wheel turns the same direction, it's limited slip. If it rotates the opposite direction, it's open.
I've seen pics with the numbers of ring/pinion teeth, stamped on either the ring or the pinion (I don't remember which). Then you just do the math. An option, if you're fixin' to change out the lube.

Somebody must've been a little too vigorous washing/detailing the truck.
The sticker on my door says 19 for the axle code, what is that? Is it the same as c9?
It's the same _ratio_ , 3.55: https://www.ford-trucks.com/articles...le-code-chart/
But it's not the same _axle_. According to the char, that code is for a 3800-lb GVW axle, which I *THINK* means it's for a half-ton truck.
