83 460 5th wheel hauler build

I recently got an 83 f250 460 4 speed 4x4 with fifth wheel hook up lookin to pump up the motor a bit for hauling. i want to get a new edelbrock carb and manifold from summit for it now and rv cam, headers an upgraded timing set maybe later. What set up do you guys recomend for powerful hauling, and how did you build your 460 for hauling? does my truck have egr?

I am sure your truck has smog stuff all over it, including a EGR. If you are going to change the cam, you might as well get one of those "straight up" timing sets and put that in at the same time.

If you want to do this in stages, I would do the carb and intake first, and run the stock cam for awhile.

I do not like headers on these trucks, not worth the trouble and fitment issues, but some people thing it's worth the headache.

wel i got the truck in nevada and thers no cats but thers all the vacuum tubes on the manifold and the black electric thing on the valve cover. if i was gonna buy headers for it wich im seriosly considering id get the flowtech 460 4x4 pickup headers (BIG-12560FLT) they gotta fit if they say its for a 4x4 pickup. idk if it makes much of a diference that the primary tube diameter is only 1 3/4" instead of 2" but it looks like a worth while kit.

2" primaries are too big for stock heads anyhow, IMO.

Truck is over 8,500# GVW if it has a 5th wheel, there never were any Cat's.
That is why the emissions sticker says NON-CATALYST.

If you ditch the EGR make sure the throttle doesn't bind.
Use a 1" carb spacer if you have to.

Oh the headers will definitely fit. The only problem I ran into in the engine compartment was the dipstick tube, I had to make a different support bracket for it.

It's underneath where the problem lies. They hang way too low, get in the way of tranny service, and starter service. And then you need custom pipes from there on, and need to try and figure out a way to get the exhaust pipes back up where they belong, so they don't hang down under the frame and look ugly when looking at the truck from the side.

What "black electric thing on the valve cover"?
I'm trying to picture an older 460 and don't recall anything like that.

Maybe the Dual Thermactor Air Control Solenoid Valve (if equipped with an Air Pump. According to my service book, even Non-catalyst trucks had air pumps) or the EGR Solenoid Vacuum Valve. Both are black plastic assemblies.

Oh, I see.
All my A.I.R. and EGR valves are vacuum controlled.

You need to run it more to find out. When they sit around, the rings can get stuck among other things. I would put it on the road and run it a little bit to see how many knocks and noises it has, and how much oil it uses. If it's burning any oil, it will show up on the sparkplugs which cylinder is the problem.

Could be a bad intake-manifold (or head) gasket allowing coolant into combustion chamber. keep your eye on the coolant level too.
