My brother has a '84 Bronco and is trying to replace the tailgate power window motor. He says he's having a lot of trouble getting the new motor gear to line up with the teeth in the window lift as well as getting it to line up with the mounts. Really crowded and hard to see anything much.

He would like to know if anyone has done this before and could please give him some advice on getting the durn thing installed properly. Says he's ready to push it off a cliff or something.

 

So last week my brother measured the mounting points and compared it to the original motor. It didn't match. He took it back to the auto parts store and they figured it must be the motor for the passenger doors, not the tailgate.

They didn't have the correct motor available so he went to another store. They looked it up and brought one out of stock. It was for the same wrong motor. The parts lady looked on the computer some more and said they had an "old style" motor in stock. It turned out to be the right one. Finally. Helps to have the right part.

So at some point Ford must have changed power window motors on their trucks.

I was prepared for this when I went to replace the tailgate motor on my 1994. A couple folks here had been saying that the side door window motors they had recently bought that the motor didn't match all 3 of the mounting holes in the door structure, and so they left one of the screws out. I wasn't going to leave any screws out, not on a tailgate motor which sees a lot of drag with the back window.

So I checked locally, the motors I could buy were the ones that did not fit exactly. The instructions with them said, "if the holes don't line up, just file one of the door holes to make a slot". Yeah, right, I'm gonna try to file a hole into a slot inside the tailgate, that I can see but not touch, or touch but not see?! I returned them.

Instead, I bought a Motorcraft re-man motor through rockauto. I swapped wires on it, because my wires had the overmolded rubber anchor piece, and the reman motor had wires spliced twice on each wire. I fixed up the motor to go back as core with the wires they sent me, keeping my good wires.

Motorcraft Reman motor fit perfect, and is a strong motor.
