RoadTrip Check List

Okay guys. I am leaving this Friday for a 2000 mile vacation with the family. In preparation for the trip I have done the following:

Rear Diff fluid
Front Calipers/pads
Alignment/bearing check
5 new tires
New Torque Converter
DNE2 install
Trans filter flush and cooler upgrade
New Alt and all new belts
New headlights
Batteries were new last winter
IP/Injectors were new last summer

I will be changing the oil and replacing the fuel filter this week. I will also be taking a spare fuel filter, some tools, battery charger and extra fluids with me.

Anything else to think about/check prior to leaving?

Is your vacuum pump recent? Do you have a gauge for vacuum? The pumps don't give you any warning when the diaphragm fails. I had brakes when I left the Verde Valley in Arizona, and my next occasion to use the middle pedal was on the Indian School Rd exit in Phoenix and I had absolutely nada, zip, zero brake boost and only a few hundred feet to come to a complete stop. This was one time in 1,000 that I was towing my trailer with electric brakes. That was very fortunate. Without that help I probably would have killed somebody. This is one of the reasons I am switching to hydroboost but if I were to keep the vacuum system I would install a gauge.

You should have seen a solid "Brake" light on if you lost vacuum. If not, then your sensor is not working. Still, you could tee in a vacuum gauge in the current system if you wanted some redundancy.

No light in my case. It was at night so I would have seen it for sure. That beats a gauge anyway as it is more eye catching. I did not know low vacuum was supposed to activate it. In my case it is moot since I'm going hydroboost, but for everyone else that would be an important safety check/test to make sure the light comes on if the vacuum fails.

Thanks guys. I knew I was forgetting somethings in my initial post.....

Coolant is good. Did a complete flush/fill and replaced the thermostat with a motorcraft one.

Vacumn pump was replaced about 30K miles ago, belts are all new.

Freon is good, A/C working.....this was the first thing the wife asked about. It would make for a very uncomfortable trip with 10 people going to Flordia and no A/C.....

Have an appt to have the tires rotated and balance prior to the trip.
