3.5 Gas Mileage

3.5 Gas Mileage
I'm real pleased this morning. The EPA ratings on the 3.5 non-ecoboost are 17 city, 24 hwy. Most of our driving is hwy so I'm focused on that. I haven't been able to get a pure hwy sample until this weekend. Car has just 2000 miles. Freeway driving, rolling terrain, on cruise, and 60 mph.....26.5 mpg!!! Super!! That's quite an improvement over the 24 stated. I'm thinking I can eke out 27 on a flat terrain. Next run I'll up the speed to 65 to see the effect.

Right now I get around 15-16 mpg around town on my '14 Sport and 21-22 on the highway running on cruise at 65 - 70.
However in a month or so I expect my city mileage to improve greatly since our new Commie mayor has decreed that the answer to jaywalkers and morons stepping out into traffic while texting and getting run over is to lower the speed limit in all of New York City to 25 mph. His "Vision Zero" program has decided that if a 6,000 pound SUV runs you over at 25 mph you stand a much better chance of survival than if you get run over at 35 mph. Sure am glad my cruise control will engage at 25 mph. Gas mileage should be terrific, 5th gear at idle most of the time!

Ha Ha sorry for you --- I couldn't deal with that traffic !
We have a long 30 and 35 mph road to get to the interstate and it freaks me out that neither the truck with 800 lbft @ 1600 rpm or the 365 hp sport will upshift going that slow, so we are running around in lower gears for 5 miles or so !!!
(That login sounds familiar - were you on another explorer forum that I used to be on as user JohnBoyToo?)

You’re certainly right about there being just too many variables. Even though YOU may think that you ran the same route, your VEHICLE may not. Did you use the same brand of fuel? Was the ambient temperature exactly the same? The humidity? The wind? Did you accelerate at exactly the same rate each time? While no one actually believes that the EPA mileage numbers are realistic, the one thing that they ARE is repeatable. They either control or correct for the variables. So, while they may show that vehicle A gets 25 mpg combined and vehicle B gets 20 mpg you’ll probably never get those numbers. But, vehicle A will get ABOUT 20% better mileage than vehicle B if driven the same way.
Prior to owning my Explorer Sport I owned a 2005 F350 PSD. I read the various posts on the forums about owners getting 20 mpg around town and 25 mpg on the highway and thought something must be wrong with my truck. I owned that truck for 8 years and drove it cross country from New York to Oklahoma and back a half dozen times and I never saw better than 19 mpg with the cruise on for 90% of the trip. Around town (and I’m NOT talking about stop and go traffic) I rarely saw better than 13 mpg and mostly 11-12 mpg. I wasn’t towing, I had a bed cover on and I drove conservatively. Where were these guys getting 25 mpg?
So, I take many of these postings with a grain of salt. There are just too many variables to compare one owner’s experience with another’s. Maybe you do get 25-26 mpg. That’s wonderful! I get 21 on the highway and 15 around the city. But then if I wanted great gas mileage, I would have bought a Prius.

My response is the commonly-held belief is EPA ratings are not achievable. My '83 Ford F150 with the 300 got very close to the EPA hwy rating when new. My 2000 Explorer got the EPA rating even after 200K miles. Now this car is getting over 2 mpg better mileage consistently. So much for commonly-held beliefs. BTW, I didn't seek out the highest mileage car in the marketplace (obviously). But I am pleased my new Explorer is saving me gas compared to my last Explorer.

With around 14,000 on my 2014 Sport I still only see 12 - 13 mpg around town in mixed driving and I've NEVER see better than 21 on the highway with the cruise set at 65 and the A/C off.
But then I didn't buy it for its fuel mileage!
P.S. Regular, Plus or Premium. I've seen no difference in mileage but there is a noticeable difference in engine smoothness between Regular and Plus.
