351W timing cover. No timing pointer?
I am swapping in a 351W that was bought as a longblock. The timing cover I have from the previous motor has no timing pointer. Looks like it has a slot for a crank sensor???? Is there a kit or easy way to mount a timing pointer? I have limited metal fab skills and tools. I have the motor rolled to tdc and where the marks on the harmonic balancer are sitting there doesn't look to be a easy place to mount one. Thanks in advance!

I should be clear and say this truck had a 351 in it from previous owner. Will be getting all new wiring and will be carbed. The block is a 72 and the heads are 69's. 4 bolt crank pulley, v-belt, factory waterpump, also has a car style dipstick hole on the timing cover, mechanical fuel pump, and a van style pan. Can I use the car style dipstick location if I block off the hole in the pan?

Looks like you got a late model motor, they dont have timing pointers, the later one's have a boss that has a hole drilled in it so you can put a metal pointer in. were you have the balancer now it has the marks on it right! you need to come up with a way to mount a pointer. how thick is the timing cover in that area? Can you drill a 1/4 inch hole and modify a bolt that you cut the head off at the length you need, thread the hole and screw in the bolt using lock tight after you grind the bolt to a point?

Well it is a late model timing cover from what I've searched. I don't feel comfortable drilling into the timing cover being this is a brand new rebuild without break-in time yet. Everything is on the motor now. That is a crafty idea however. So basically if i want to mount a proper timing pointer, I'll have to swap for a later style timing cover? Dang

No offense taken. It fits a few things. Including 91/96 F150 with a 302. That boss you describe is for a timing probe. The pointer part number I mentioned above fits around that boss.
