84 f250 problem

I have an 84 f250 with a 351w and a 4 speed manual transmission. Everytime I go off roading it seems like my truck runs really rough afterwards. Won't idle at all and seems to get really hot. Off-roading includes going up steep hills and running through a small pond. Any help would be appreciated.

Is it always after or sometimes during it? If its the latter you may be starving the carburetor of fuel at steep angles or getting the distributor wet.

Skip the small pond. If it still does it, I suspect dirt in the fuel system getting stirred up, causing the carb to overflow and dump fuel into the engine.

If it only does it after the pond adventure, I suspect what the previous poster mentioned, water in the ignition system.

It's only after the steep hills but doesn't stop after I'm done. Last night I took a rag and choked out my carb to try and get debris out of it. After 2 or 3 times doing that it was fixed.

What kind of air cleaner assembly are you using? It's possibly that dirt/grime is getting sucked in due to a weak seal around the housing to the top of the carb.

Pull the fuel filter and dump it into a coffee can. If you see lots of brown rust, you have fuel tank problems. You can also pull the top of the carb and see how much dirt and rust is down inside it

It's all stock. I'll check the fuel filters. I put an extra inline one in as well as the one that screws into the carb.
