Originally Ford stated (in the owners manual) that 15W40 was "preferred" above 30*F (and "could" be used down to 10*). 10W30 was "preferred" between -10* and 30*(and "could" be used from 30* to 90*). The manual also states that 15W40 is "required" for towing heavy loads above 50*F. 5W40 wasn't even mentioned in the original owners manuals.

Now, in their technical web site, Ford states that 5W40 is good for -20* to over 100*.

Clearly some people decide to make their own choices on oil instead of relying on Ford's published info. Roadrunner01 has chosen to use 10W30 at higher temps and while towing and it has given him very good UOA results.

Personally, I believe that different brands of oil behave a little differently from each other and it is hard to make blanket statements. As an example, Mobil 1 TDT has not sheared as much in my truck as Rotella T6 and Valvoline PBT. Mobil Delvac 1 ESP shears even less than the TDT.

 

I'm gonna go get a 12 pack. Let me know what the consensus is. Last thread like this I finished the 12 pack and many others before the thread mercifully died.

Yes it is pricy, but when paired with a bypass filter, can run to 100k miles plus.

The reason that the 6.0's eat through oil so much is obviously because of the high pressure oil system. Our oil is a group 4 PAO base stock oil. We are one of only a couple companies in North America using a group 4 as opposed to group 3. It is extremely sheer resistant to hold up in the 6.0. The oil also has a 14 TBN for extended drains. It was tested on an oil rig, on one of the pumps I believe, and was ran for 100,000 hours (I will let you do the math figuring that to miles). After the 100,000 hours oxidation and viscosity were still within spec. I obviously can't guarantee 100k drain intervals, but if your analysis' are coming back good, we have had customers go there and beyond. We got our start working with the 6.0's in 2005, so this animal isn't anything new to us

 

I understand our claims are hard to swallow, and quite frankly most guys just are not comfortable leaving an oil in that long. It's not for everyone, but might be valuable for someone to do their own research and look into

 

I'll tell ya what I'm gonna do, I have a healthy 6.0 with 92000 on the clock. Ill use my truck as a ginnie pig if your company pays for the damage from not changing the oil. Ill change the filters every 5000 miles and add a quart and do a oil sample test that you guys pay for, other wise I call bulls**t
