26 Gallon Fuel Tank on the F-350 6.7 Diesel

I just bought a 2015 F-350 Diesel only to find out is has a 26 gallon fuel tank. Is there some reason Ford only put a 26 gallon fuel tank on a vehicle that is designed to pull large and heavy loads? When I pull my 15,000 lbs. fifth wheel I get 8.9-9.1 miles to gallon, thus, I am filling up every 200 miles.

Is this an EPA requirement or what. My Ram 1500 had a 32 Gallon tank and the F-150 has a 36 gallon tank for the 6 cylinder??? A larger tank is not even an option on the F-350 SRW short (156") wheel base.

It used to have a bit larger tank but they had to reduce it to add the def tank.

There are some aftermarket tanks or in bed fuel tanks that can help though.

Welcome to FTE. For some unknown reason, Ford has for a long time thought that folks who drive a short bed super duty didn't need as large a tank.

A small part is the shorter overall length, but as you pointed out, bigger tanks fit in other short vehicles. Maybe it was done because that's all the soccer mom crowd needs, or maybe it was to prevent sticker shock from having to fill up a large tank.

Either way, as Senix mentioned, either a bed mounted auxiliary tank or something like a Titan replacement tank is the route most who have a short bed and haul a bunch have followed.

Your only option is a Titan or an in bed tank... and they are not cheap!

Not sure why Ford did this,(safety, in case of collision?) there is room for more tank down there. My F150 5.5ft box has a 36gal, with little room to spare.

I don't remember the exact tank sizes, but I seem to recall my sd having a 38, my van a 36 and my bronco a 29. 26 is way too small in my opinion and 35-40 should be the smallest offered.

If the Ford engineers had only put the DEF tank outside the frame rails, on either side, we could have a bigger fuel tank. No fire danger from the DEF, like the old Chevy sidesaddle gas tanks.
